Almost certainly some movement of the brake calipers at the front. The pivot pins get worn and then the caliper can float up and down a little bit.
Is it more noticable when you brake in reverse and then brake going forward ?
If it is, then this is what the problem is.
I don't know what other people think but my 96 has been doing this for years; as the only fix is to replace the calipers I just keep driving it - am I driving a death trap ??
All I know is that it pulls up straight and can stop quiker than a lot of modern stuff.

Are you sure it is not the suspension bushes or the ball joints. Ball joints go all the time but are easy and cheap to replace. Your next MOT should reveal if these have worn. Suspension bushes degrade when they get oil on them and are a bugger to replace but well worth it as the car will suddenly become tight and quiet.
