Hi All
been a while since I posted, but now back on the restoration project and need some help! its on a 1971 96....

I connected the battery for the first time at the weekend, keys weren't even in the ignition and the starter engaged (frightened the life out of me!)

So with the keys not in the ignition and the starter engaging, there is obviously something wired up wrong!

I have a new loom from AutoSparks which is a brilliant copy of the original and I (thought) was thorough when I labeled the old one coming off the car.

I had the alternator and Starter Motor refurbished by a Specialist who seems to know his stuff too

Starter has the grey wire and live battery wire (red) on the 13mm threaded connection and the yellow to the spade terminal. Alternator has the 2 grey wires to the right threaded terminal and the 3 pin plug


I’ve double checked everything with the Haynes Manual, so I’m a little stumped, images of the ignition barrel wires, fuse box, starter and alternator
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Glad to hear you found the problem.

For the wiring diagram, get it blown up to A3, or even A2, and get it, laminated, put it on your garage wall....Makes life a lot easier!!

Found it!

my 1971 is actually wired as a 1970 and the alternator has a separate earth connector that screws into the back of the body, wired it up and all behaves as it should, good old Haynes Manual (although I'm having to use a magnifying glass to look up the wires/terminal numbers!)

thanks for the tips, I've been playing some more and the starter engages even with the yellow disconnected so I'm thinking it's now the Starter Motor internal wiring is wrong (I have a spare on the bench that works as it should so I'm going to swap them over, maybe a Christmas Day activity (joking my wife would kill me!!!)

Have you disconnected the yellow wire and measured a constant 12V at it? There may be a short or some incorrect connections on this wire somewhere. Could it be that when you turn the key that you loose the 12V to the yellow terminal and the starter stops - perhaps it is using the incorrect terminals on the ignition switch. Have they introduced any new relays into the loom ?
It shouldn't be too hard to find... I thought that there may have been 2 spade terminals on the starter? I see what looks like a bullet connector on your one, just check that you are connected up right there also.
