Hello all,

I've just joined so this is my first post here. My Father in law had an interest in Saab 95 and 96's for quite a while and acquired a large collection of cars and spares in his last few years. Sadly he passed on a couple of years ago, and everything has been left to stagnate since then.
I've always been keen on classic cars, and have just started to sort everything out. Among the cars I have discovered a 96 Souvenir, number 114. She is looking a little sorry for herself as the lacquer had been peeling badly when he bought the car,and it has been stored outside for a couple of years now. I washed her off at the weekend and there aren't any real problems apart from a rust hole in the bonnet, but we have spare bonnets so that shouldn't be a problem.
I have no idea when she was last started so I stuck a battery on, plumbed in a petrol can, and after a quick clean of the points she fired up!
At this stage I'm not sure what to do with her, as I would like her for myself, but wife is currently forbidding it as too many other projects on the go.
As an aside, are there many of these still around? And who here has one?

Be gentle with both ladies (the car and the wife!) and maybe your wife will eventually "come round" - once she's ridden in it she'll probably change her mind about it. Paint/lacquer peeling isn't too bad a cosmetic issue (you should see my 95!) but you will need to have a really good look underneath for corrosion before submitting it for an MoT. In my very limited experience, the Souvenirs had a greater tendency to rot than earlier Saabs - maybe something to do with the allegedly "poor quality" batch of steel bought around that time. My 1978 99 Turbo (one of the early 3-doors) suffered from the same issue and I took a lot of photos before I cut it all out and welded in a lot of new steel. As your car's been sitting around for a while it's bound to have suffered from tin-worm; your problem will be to what extent. Good luck. Best to wear a disguise and slip out of the house (unnoticed) at all convenient moments to work on it ......

Hi there and welcome! I own Souvenir 109 - see below in its element!



There are still a good few about - 1 only a few miles from me - although I did get some parts from one being scrapped last year in Newcastle.

I hope you get yours on the road and enjoy using it

Hi gingerwizard..and welcome.
There are a few left but as they were produced in low numbers it is reasonably rare car..but rare in V4 SAAB terms doesn't normally add much/any extra value. Lacquer peeling on a Souvenir is normal..my old car No 89 had peeling on the bonnet and the roof..apart from that it was a clean car. The seats on a Souvenir normally suffer as well..they get very thin and turn to ribbons without much effort.
Be gentle with the engine..if it's been standing for a while let her come up to temperature before revving it hard..the balance shaft and camshaft bearings may have dried out and if they are run dry they will fail pretty quickly.
