Rumaging around in my box of old Saab bits a few weeks ago I came across the clock from my original 1969 V4 - the one that started it all! I thought it would be great to fit it into my Sonett but was somewhat disappointed when conecting it to 12 volts it resulted in - absolutely nothing!

Anyway, finally got around to having a poke inside and after a gentle clean and 20 mins of pushing the mechanisim round by hand (again very gently) it finally went on its own.

Been on bench test for 3 days now and only lost a minute so I'm well chuffed!

So next job will be to fit it in the Sonett and for me anyway it will be great to have a bit of my very first car still working in my current Saab.

Sorry just had to share that with you - means a lot to me!

I had a Butler/Lucas one on my first 96 and an Avanti on the rally car. As you say the Avanti would probably look better with the black dash so I'll probably go with that. Under the glove box is the palce to go as the interior light is there so an easy connection for power.

Where would you put it? Under the dash or at the door pillar? Butler/Lucas Flexilight of course.

Mind you the Avanti type lends itself well to the finish of the dashboard, if mounted under the glove box:-

Well - finally got round to fitting the clock! Took the aircon eyeball vent out from the centre, blanked off the pipe behind and it was just the right diameter!

Bit of a sod to get behind it though due to the massive fan unit for the aircon but I managed it in the end. The glove box interior is a one piece moulding with the rest of the fibre glass dash so no way in there and that big black box under the glove box is the fan unit which takes up a whole load of space.

My aircon compresser siezed shortly after importing the car but I have retained the inside fan as it is more powerful than the std fan and blows a lot of air through the eyeball vents either end of the dash when needed. A mini aircon system in it's own right without the drag on the crank pulley!

So - my original 1969 clock from my first car bought 2nd hand in 1972 is back on the road!

Yes, the adjuster is very fussy. Assuming the works are the same as the later square-ish clock. I've repaired a few of these by managing to get the solder link "fuse" flowed together again. Originally the solder is just a bead that is squeezed into place mechanically. It's very low temp stuff, only about 115, so a quick dab with a fine pointed soldering iron will,if you're careful, restore the link. Hold the two halves together with fine tip tweezers.

Actually Derek, I did think about uping the voltage but it's the spring tension that regulates the speed and it has an adjuster. The voltage is used to activate a solnoid every 3 mins or so, hence it doesn't use much juice.

The clock would probably be happier with 12.8v. It's unlikely to ever see only 11.99v. You might even get your minute back.

Used to use it for powering displacement transducers and load cells - now only gets used for jobs like the clock!

I have several of these and would love to turn one into a desk clock..somehow mounting it with a 240v to 12v converter..but I just don't know how you would do that?
Imho they were so much better looking than the square clock!
That's a handy looking DC supply unit..whats it normally used for?
