My steering seems particularly heavy. I have compared with my brothers 96 and even though he runs his front tyres at 24 psi and I am now up to 28 to try to lighten the load, mine still seems unduly heavy.
Any ideas chaps?

Rack should be greased with the steering on full lock. Which side depends on RHD or LHD. Tyre pressure can help you out. 32psi front and 30psi rear maybe. Yes, 165 is heavier than the standard 155. There is no real need to change to 165 IMO.

Mine is not particularly light either during maneuvers, but I like its precise feeling on the road. The size of the tyres matters here. Anything over 155 will stiffen the direction. In this case, I would disconnect one steering joint at a time to precisely locate the binding. The more likely culprits would be the suspension ball joints, especially if they are of the late type without the grease nipples.

Hi, sorry to reply on an hold topic but I have the same issue, I think. My steering is very heavy. I have find the nipple to grease the steering rack, I emptied a complete grease stick inside. Guess it hasn't seen any drop of grease for ages. I can't drive for the moment, as getting papers for the car currently is a bit hairy. When I'm parked on gravel, steering is light as a feather. When parked on paved road, I need muscles to turn the wheel. I think the grease will circulate while driving in the future. I can't compare to another 96 as mine is the only one I saw in France in my whole life. I'll let you know.

I would have thought that is pointing to an issue somewhere in the suspension, or the rack itself. Very high castor? Stiff steering joints?
If you jack it up and turn things is it the same. You ideally need to do this by supporting the lower suspension arm, rather than having everything hanging, as that's not what the suspension is like in real life.
