i'm just trying to get clear the differences between my '68 and 1970 on cars.('69 is slightly different again)

'68 has rad with top and bottom tanks, '70 on has rad with side tanks and overflow bottle

'68 has t/stat housing with 2 small connections, both 16 dia, one runs to heater, other to choke , both lines merge just above gearbox and run back to pump

'70 on has same 2 lines but an extra line going from close to the t/stat to merge with the return line but quite close to the pump (this being a direct by-pass)

(i've drawn this out but don't know how i can put a pdf on here)

my question is, is the t/stat housing for '70 on cars different to '68 and has anyone got any pics of the later arrangement, as I'd like to incorporate them in my '68 (the Manual is not clear at all)

thanks, i now see that the heater supply is taken from just below t/stat housing, on the manifold

Actually no. The T/L-connector pipe on the thermostat housing has its own feeder hole in the manifold that is not influenced by the thermostat.

The construction with an L-connector that connects to the water pump and the other line of the heater circuit screwed into the left hand side of the manifold results in a very quick feed of warm water to the heater matrix. Holland had a cold winter 1986-'87 and I remember that the heater started to produce warm air in no time; much quicker than my Sonett does nowadays with a T-connector on top of the thermostat housing with the right hand hose connecting at the back of the engine to the pipe of the heater circuit that connecs to the water pump.

I remember having 4 96's lined up with the bonnets up when I first came to do my cooling system in the '70's and they were all different!

Good luck!

thanks Woody, sorry to be a pain but....

yes mine is the top left of the parts diags

firstly, yes it looks like the pressure pipe from pump to blocks was changed to a better flowing one....you wouldn't have a spare one, would you?

i assume that the bottom parts diag is for 70 on (middle one is same but just without choke heater): so, 70 on has only one 16 dia port on t/stat hsg, from there into a tee, one branch is feed to choke, other is return back to very near the pump suction(i.e. a by-pass)
and, there is a feed from the top of the radiator (??) via pipe 20 to the heater matrix, from matrix onto a tee, the branch is the return from the choke, other run is the return back to pump suction
have i read this right, as its quite difficult to make it out?

no, that can't be right....the heater would only see a flow when the t/stat has opened, although i suppose thats quite sensible

Woody, you must know!

Below scan of page from parts book, and the thermostat pipes. I believe you should have the V shaped t-piece on the 67/8 engine. The second T piece is for 1968/9, and the third inverted L is for 1970+.
You will also notice that the main pipes from back of engine to waterpump are slightly different. I have these and can take pics if needed. Have you got all the necessary pipes?
