A member of my family went to the Hermiston Gait Commercial centre, outside the Edinburgh, on an evening, to pick someone up, who was coming out of the city on the tram. There is a tram stop at the edge of this commercial centre. The person checked what the maximum waiting time allowed was, which was 3.5 hours. They arrived at 21:30, and left the site at 22:20 hrs.
Imagine their shock when they receive parking charge for £100, reduced to £60 if you pay within 14 days. The charge notice says that the parking area in question closes at 22:00 hrs.
There was a big event on in town, and there were lots of other people there picking up family/friends coming off the trams from town. Rich pickings for UKPC!!!
I went back there today, on behalf of my family member, to check what the signs say.
It turns out that most of the signs say that maximum duration is 4 hours, and these signs say that the parking area is closed from 22:00 to 06:00 hrs. However the one single sign that my family member looked at, that says maximum parking time is 3.5 hours, makes no mention of the parking area closing between certain times.
So, question, what does the Saab community think that they should do? Pay it? Appeal it? Ignore it?
I've searched a bit on this subject on line, and the general consensus on forums on this subject, seem to be ignore it, as long as they do not know who was driving, they cannot take any sort of legal action.
There will be a blizzard of demanding, threatening letters, first from UKPC, and then their debt collecting agency.
It then goes up to £160. The debt collecting agency letters will apparently be dressed up to look as if they are from Sherriff's Officers, but they have no legal basis.

I don't know much about this, but try emailing "Honest John" at the telegraph newspaper. He answers motoring questions of all types and is pretty clued up on legal matters.
