It only seems a few minutes ago I was adjusting the carb and now I have the welder out and am finding it really hard not to remove the rear axle for a clean up...

Can anyone help me out with how the rear spring mount is assembled. I have had a look in the parts book and I have dismantled and cleaned and painted these previously on the 96 but can't remember exactly what they are supposed to look like.

This is what I have to work with.

Note sheared bolt. Assuming that is 23 (listed as bolt) in the parts book diagram below is that removable from the top? It is pretty rusted in - I might try cutting it flush and tapping it upwards. Bear in mind I can see what looks like the top of a bolt inside the boot as I have cut some metal away.

And then what does this bit look like when dismantled?

Bump stop screwed into hexagonal bit and hexagonal bit then screwed on to the remains of bolt 23?

Help appreciated!

Cheers

Getting that out was epic!

I don't think it was factory welded in, it had just fused together over the last 55 years.

I ended up using several drill bits, sacrificing a screwdriver and finally having success with the powerfile.

I have ordered a bolt, hopefully long enough and then a simple bit of welding will get it back together.

Bit of progress.

Managed to get the sheared bit of bolt out of the hex part. Took three goes at welding nuts on and the rattle gun on max!

I have put the hex and bump stop back in for a soak but actually just realised I don't actually need to separate the two so I think will leave to avoid potential damage.

Next up was bolt 23 from inside the car. Ground the sheared bolt flush from below the car but that didn't help so drilled a hole in it from the top. That didn't help either so will think on it. Probably a bigger hole but just the depth of the head.

Cheers

Thanks for the info guys.

Good to see for sure that bumpstop screws into hex then that screws to bolt 23.

I have a big nut welded to the remainder of the bolt and the bits soaking in ATF mixed with Acetone so fingers crossed!

Yes, bolt 23 stays with the car - lovely resto photo by the way Matt!

But, as I am chopping out some grot I can see the top of the bolt.

As the bolt has sheared I am hoping to get it out and replace. I have tried tapping it from below but no movement so I will grind it flush and try again. Hopefully it is not welded in.

Fortunately mine is not too crusty, just the spring mount and one corner of the boot floor here http://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?topic_id=48993&whichpage=6

I'll let you know how I get on!

Cheers

Here's a couple of images of my rebuild, it looks like the threaded bolt stays with the body and the large Hex bit threads onto that (then the bump stop threads to that with a split washer)

That looks pretty crispy under there, good luck with the welder!!

Wouldn't this all bolt in from underneath, including '23'?

Yes, 23 must be completely fixed to the body.
Then, the bump stop can be removed unscrewing the hexagonal bit.

The hexagonal bit keeps in place the silent block that keeps in place the spring

Here on the picture the bump stop is missing but the 23 and hexagonal bit are in place:
