I pulled a gearbox out of a late 96 and it has an unusual input shaft..rather than the straight shaft seen in most gear box's this one has what I can only discribe as a stub to go through pressure plate..the rest of the shaft tapers down..i will add pictures later but has this been altered or did they change the shaft on later cars?

That's the one Woody. I have 7 gear box's in one place or another (2 in cars with no engine) and this is the only one with that style of shaft..i can't even remember seeing one in the other box's i have had in the past..i presume that the spline arrangement is the same as the straight shaft?

Like this one below?
I have three transmissions with this shaft and two with the later thick shaft:-
There are no markings on it at all.
Thin:-
F 34461 smooth casing
F106928 ribbed casing,
F118600 ribbed casing, acquired August 1972, collected from Stallingborough.
Thick:-
F343208 late ribbed casing with revised primary and counter shafts
F351105 late ribbed casing with revised primary and counter shafts

There was a third box I used to have which came in my 2nd V4 a 1972 model acquired 1977. It had the thick input shaft but had an earlier number than the later two but I cannot find the number at present. It was in my old black car that went to JDT.
According to the parts book there were significant changes at the following Nos 114860 and 315085, the changes being the shafts mentioned as above. It is such a long time since I stripped the boxes that my memory is vague on the differences.
The casing F343208 came out of a 1975 V4 96 belonging to a friend. which conforms to the time line for the change. The thicker input shaft is not catalogued and I always had the impression it came earlier.

Pre 1972 gearbox. There was a change to thick shafts then.
