Right then, Blue SAAB sold so in a couple of weeks I will be hiring a trailer and driving up to Ross on Wye to collect this one and bring it down to Plymouth.
I found these photos so thought I would put them on here to give you an idea what the car is like...

These photos are from a couple of years ago but I was up there a few weeks back and aside from a little more dust the car looks the same. The garage is bone dry which is a result. Engine turns over by hand and I reckon a weekends work would see it MOTd.

I will post again when I head up to collect the car.

Cheers

Not urgent as for now I can just block the vent in the existing rocker cover and source a filler cap with a vent.
That won't work, your filler cap fits over the stub on the cover, the later ones with a hose take-off and oil trap (standard Ford part, not exclusive to V4) fit into the hole and are a different diameter. Nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of creativity though.

Yes, see pic below.

In your pic is that a RH cover fitted on the LH side?
Yes, but modified. I've added the hose take-off and an internal oil splash baffle from a LH cover.

Hi Melle,
Yes, that would be neat solution and yes if I could grab a set of late rocker covers that would be great. Not urgent as for now I can just block the vent in the existing rocker cover and source a filler cap with a vent. Is the LH rocker cover the same on the later cars? By the way, your engine bay is looking nice. I know you mentioned in your thread you want to tidy up the wiring but it puts mine to shame!

Interesting to see the position of the distributor on these 2 engines. Both different and mine had the vac pot flange parallel to the crank so different again. What is correct? I rather think that mine is/was.

The hose between the air filter and the rocker cover runs via the filler cap.

Hi Melle,
Yes, very tight around choke and was planning on modifying a rocker cover to move the breather. Your solution sounds better! Could you post a pic of the later rocker cover?
Running on the adapter modified for the 28/36 for now but will modify the spare to suit.
Really leaning towards throwing the new engine in and getting some miles on it as worried about it sitting on the bench not moving.
Cheers

Great to hear you got it working. Dig you manage to modify the vacuum plate? Things look a bit tight around the choke, I have a set of the later type rocker covers with the take-off hose in the filler cap if required.

In advance of the rebuilt engine going in I wanted to get everything set up so that I know the ignition and carb are working well and the engine will fire right up with minimal faff.
Peter advised that the 28/36 was not going to be enough and there would be a risk of running lean. Managed to pick up two 38 DGAS carbs locally on FB and have rebuilt one. Fitted today for a successful test. The only issue I had was that I had to tap a new thread and fit a threaded inlet barb and there was a little fuel leak there which was cured with a copper washer but I will keep an eye on it.
The carb is jetted for a 2.0L Pinto so that is probably a good starting point for the new engine but thoughts welcome.
I also need to sort the throttle linkage as not quite getting full opening but that will be easy enough when the new engine goes in.

Thanks to Melle for the spot on the cheap ebay manual choke kit - works a treat!

Cheers

Hi,
I believe so with the guides and not sure as Peter the engine builder sourced them but I will ask him next time I see him. I would guess Burtons.
Cheers

Are the valve guides V6 and where did you get them from? Burtons??
Recommend cap screws instead of studs for the exhaust.
DirtbikerPosted - 30 Nov 2021 : 21:56:39
Hi Woody,
Just under, about 43mm. Peter explained that if you go too large you end up with not enough mating surface and the exhaust blows. Yes, I have some enlarged intermediate flanges but no, haven't thought about gaskets yet!
Thought you might like to see inside

There is a little surface rust starting to appear but it looks much worse than it is in the photos. It has taken me a long time to find a day free to collect the engine so it has been sitting on Peter's bench for a while!

Cheers

I see the exhaust ports have been enlarged. 44mm?
What are you using for gaskets there? I assume you have bored out the intermediate flange.

I would think a 28/36DCD would work OK with a re-jet, see John Passini's book. You could always upgrade to a 36DCD, they come up on eBay quite regularly.

Melle, I will probably do just that. I have started a new thread on flywheels.

Anyone got any suggestions for carbs - Peter is worried my 28/36DCD will not be enough and the engine will run lean and be unhappy. I could do with something readily and affordably available as only a stop gap to get running. 93mm pistons and 1.7 crank so 1815cc I think plus big valves and ported heads. Should go well!

Cheers

I would machine the flywheel, fit it and run the engine with a carb first. Retrofitting EFI shouldn't be too difficult and if needed it's easy enough to yank the engine out again. Let me know when you plan to have a flywheel machined, I need one too.
