I thought I'd better move my 95 thread here, as it was getting a bit away from "Idle Chat"!

I fitted the CD ignition system that I built for my original car back in the early 70s yesterday. naturally, it didn't work, as it had been sitting under the workbench for 30 years!

I didn't have time to investigate before going to work, but I've had another look this morning, and yes it was me being dumb! I'd managed to get the points and coil connections transposed somehow! Swapping the wires over provided an instant cure, and she's now running sweetly on CD ignition!

Here's a pic of the installation, with the lid removed from the ignition box, so you can see what's in there:

And here's some pix of the car:

She's certainly sound enough to use as a daily driver, although she will need the attention of a body shop in the not-too-distant future.

One thing that is concerning me slightly is that all the window rubbers are pretty cracked and perished. I doubt very much whether I'll be able to get proper replacements, so does anyone know a source of alternatives?

Also, although smooth and quiet, she now feels very slow compared to my 96! (See "Idle Chat" about the SAH brochure I found!). I don't want to turn it into a fire breathing dragon, but reckon a Weber 34ICH might be a worthwhile addition. I don't suppose anyone has one lying around that they don't want?

Tomorrow I'll be greasing the steering - something I should have done when servicing it last week, but my grease gun has a solid delivery tube and its a right b*****d to get it to seat properly on the nipple! I've got a flexible tube for it now, so hopefully that will make life a lot easier!

Onwards and upwards.....!!!

Certainly looks like the 6 bar version is the later version. The later ones use the flatter bars for the flatter roofed cars, it's larger than the 5 bar version, probably because the later cars were physically wider than the V4's.

If you look at these 95's fitted with 5 bar racks - you can see the legs are more upright than the 6 bar versions.

I have two 5 bar racks of which I'm sure were originally fitted to a 95, both fit my 95 perfectly as well. I also have a 6 bar rack, the previous owner told me he bought it new with his '77 95, so I assumed it was a later type that probably fit the 900 as well. Never tried that one on either 95 or 900 as of yet. I also have a 96 rack, that one has 5 bars.

The one on the red one looks the same as mine, and yes it is close, but does clear the roof OK. The 90/99 does have a very flat roof.

I wonder if the rubber feet (from the later rack) aren't helping? Like Derek, I wondered if the feet are 'handed' at all. Are there any cluse stamped in the back of each one?

I suspect Dereks is for a Saab 90 - as it wouldnt clear the roofline of the 95, but couldn't say for sure until it was trial fitted to one.

Interesting. The one I have has 6 bars, wider and more usable, and no dog leg on the side mounts. Would mean it's closer to the roof but I thought it was for the 95. Edit - I note that Melle's pic, which oddly didn't show until I posted this shows what looks like my rack with 6 bars. Would confirm that it's a real one and being bigger would be the one to have IMO. This is the one I asked you far a valuation on John. For Sale?

On other rack on car pictures I note that the 3 mounts each side look to be vertical at the front slightly inwards for the centre one and a bit more inwards at the back. Usually after being on and off a few times the fittings get marked up in the correct position, especially where the bolts go.

Thanks melle. I tried to get the bars that push into the "platform" straight but that didn't work...the "hooks" broke free when tensioning. I tried setting the gutter grips first then tightening the platform bars...again the grips jumped off the gutters.
For now it's rock solid..the platform flexes before the legs move..hopefully it won't be over worked so should serve them well.

Looking good with the rack. I think the "uprights" should be under a slight angle? If I remember correctly I have the feet inserted into the tube of the rack almost until it hits the bend. Hope this shows what I mean (utterly cool but not my car):

It wasn't a straight fit...I don't know why but it just wouldn't fit "square" I had to bend almost every leg and adjuster....took almost 2 hrs in all to get a satisfactory fit..then it started to rain so it's where it is for now.

John,

I sent an email to you regarding locks and a few spares I have that might be useful to you, but I haven't heard anything back. Have you changed your e-mail address? If so, can you please send me an update? Mine is still the same.

Cheers,

Graphite powder is the only thing for locks..it doesn't trap moisture, doesn't hold onto dirt and doesn't freeze. If you can't find a supply of it just rub a 2B pencil on paper until you have a pile of dust..rub it on you key and push it in and out of the lock..repeat as may times as you can be bothered adding more powder every 4-6 times..you can't over do it!

Without wishing to be negative (well done for fixing the heater!), I've had some less than wonderful experiences with spray grease (the white lithium stuff). IME it tends to dry out and go a bit sticky after a while. I think especially bad for parts that don't see regular movement. FWIW Ferrosol is my current favourite spray lube, grease it ain't, but it's a good problem solver - penetrates really well and seems to provide longer lasting lubrication than other similar products. Not cheap but it does at least smell nice.

Yes, I've heard that you can sometimes "build" a lock to suit your keys, but as Ian hints, it sounds fiddly! I had enough trouble just getting the metal flap thingy back into place........!

Ian

Never did Ian. Too "fiddly"..... I just live with 3 keys for all the doors/boot and ignition.....
