Can anyone share any experience with oil coolers - what adjustments would I need to make to the oil pump / filter to suit? Any other considerations?

Normally there is a bypass valve within the thermostat. The thermostat can be within the sandwich block (prefered) or separate. It allows a trickle flow of oil and only increases flow when the oil gets hot. For everyday commuter use they aren't really necessaary.

I follow this interesting stuff to improve our v4 but let me one question, does it have a bypass valve? is it useful?. I think that when the engine is cold it is no necesary to let the oil pass through the cooler and permit it to reach the right temperature as soon as possible.

The car is Simo Lampinen/John Davenport - 1968 RAC winner.
The wire is for a radiator blind. Mounting an adaptor plate at the radiator mounting holes enables the oil cooler matrix and bottle to be installed without further holes to the body. The cooler is braced/attached to the front panel stay. The pipes might need to be a little longer though. You could mount it horizontally MGB style below the radiator and cut an air hole in the front apron. Problem will be getting pipes from sandwich block past the engine mounting and under the waterpump. Aeroquip H/Prssre pipes don't bend easily.

A remote oil filter plate would also make life easier if you have the rally exhaust.

Thanks again Woody. The pipes I have will only allow mounting on the OS. That looks a good spot for the cooler but i'm going to try and mount it as level as possible to the oil pump so that the pump has a little less work to do. I was thinking of below the radiator, behind the front valence but I don't think there is enough air movement there..if it was a rally car I would be happy to make a few holes..this area would be protected by a sump guard..but thats for the next project.
What does the wire in that picture do..the one that runs parallel to the long hose infront of the blower box to the radiator...is it for a radiator blind?

Mine are 49" & 35" though my sandwich has slip on connections rather than screw-in.
An alternative mounting is to secure the cooler next to the radiator and mount the expansion bottle adjacent to it.

I managed to buy a 2nd hand cooler..thermostat plate and braided pipes for just over 50..trouble is the pipes are quite short..I tried to fit the cooler to the same side as the altinator but there just isn't the room so it has to go to the other side (like Woodys).
Does anyone know what length pipes are needed?

The oil cooler (which fits under the oil filter) from a 2.3 turbo Merkur XR4ti fits perfectly.
I think that car is called Sierra over there...

Also, the Thunderbird 2.3 turbo of North America is same.

It connects to 5/8" heater hose. I can post a pic if anybody needs...

Your oil cooler lookes the same as an MGB item..if so they can be bought for 30 with hoses (2nd had)..thats a big saving on the price of the oil cooler in the 1st post...adaptors for the sandwich plate to MGB pipes will be needed. Personally I would have some made by my local pipe fitter (about 30 a set for stainless braided hoses)
So sandwich plate 58 + oil coler 30 + hoses 30 = 120
An oil cooler from a scrapped Volvo 850 or SAAB 9000 could be almost free knocking the price down to 90.

Have a 10row in the Troll, but it isn't connected at the moment as I need to find a sandwich plate with built in thermostat, which the above doesn't appear to have.

Got one fitted to my sonett V4. Very simple to fit just use the sandwich plate. I have my placed by the shark gills on the left hand side. Just remember to add more oil!

This looks like a goo package, I got mine cooler matrix from a scrap yard
