TTruckie | Posted - 19 Oct 2012 : 12:18:33 Hi all,
After collecting bits and bobs, some hot, time has come to start the rebuild. I have stripped the donor closed deck block. It was a bit of a gamble as it had been sat in a damp shed for 20 years! The oil (and water) was drained - a slow job as it was thick and lumpy!
Amazingly the crank turned and every bolt was loosened without any shearing - a dream engineering job.
The donor is a closed deck block that I am planning to fit open deck heads to as they are gas flowed. Apart from a couple of small differences in water way location (most blocked off anyway) I don't see any reason why this wont work. I'm using the closed deck block as a donor as it is stronger. (I was originally going for 93mm pistons but now going for the 90.8mm pinto pistons)
Does anyone know why I cant use open deck heads on a closed deck engine?
I will keep you updated.

Aero-Eng | Posted - 17 Jun 2013 : 22:23:05 Good article in the SAAB OC Driver! You didn't mention you were having to build a new engine though...!

hillbilly | Posted - 15 May 2013 : 20:04:29 That engine looks great, I hope everything is ok now. |
TTruckie | Posted - 14 May 2013 : 22:28:56 missing core plug!
in and out ps the rocker covers are not final - used old ones as chain rubs. |
TTruckie | Posted - 14 May 2013 : 18:37:59 loads of bolts and other things..... including a 'spare' core plug!!!!
as they say 1 step forward and umpteen back!!!
Finished the engine, fitted it, connected everything up. Pressure tested the pistons (160-170 PSI). last thing to do was to fill it up with water....
in went the very expensive coolant and then out poured the coolant!! as fast as i could top it up, it pee'd out the bottom from the flywheel area. I looked at my spare engine (1967) to see what what wrong.... nothing was obvious.
After much head scratching I had to disconnect everything and pull the engine - diary simply says bugger! As soon as the engine was out I could see a core plug sized hole behind the flywheel that was bereft of a core plug! 45 mins later core plug fitted and engine ready to go back in.
What else will I find........... |
Aero-Eng | Posted - 06 May 2013 : 23:38:29 Looking good. Found any bolts left over yet? |
TTruckie | Posted - 02 May 2013 : 22:40:56 as usual - 1 step forward 2 steps back!!!
the big high flow V6 oil pump didn't fit in sump so a little 'fettling' was required!!!
almost ready to go in! hopefully this weekend

hillbilly | Posted - 02 Apr 2013 : 21:09:19 looking good. |
TTruckie | Posted - 01 Apr 2013 : 22:17:06 pistons are in and new metal timing gears from Malbrad fitted
To fix the issue with open-deck heads on a closed-deck block, I had the head welded up to fill the cut out on the open-deck heads (marked by black pen)

TTruckie | Posted - 28 Mar 2013 : 10:25:59 Core plugs fitted
Crank fitted
Pistons - old/new
All going well until the new conrod bolts were missing! Tracked them down at the balancers - had to go over and pick them up. Fitting the pistons did not go well and I managed to bend a oil control ring!!! arrgghhhhhhhhh! The oil control rings on these new nural pistons are wafer thin. now need a replacement.

TTruckie | Posted - 25 Mar 2013 : 09:33:43 Thanks Hillbilly I shall check it out and ensure it works. |
hillbilly | Posted - 25 Mar 2013 : 08:04:09 The timing set has a dedicated oil feed, the oil is supplied under pressure through a angular hole in the block to the gears and drains back to the sump. The oilways will need cleaning and clearing with compressed air. |
Aero-Eng | Posted - 24 Mar 2013 : 23:13:25 That's why SAAB/Ford fitted a fibre wheel. But oh, no, you can't just agree with the design Engineers can you....
Looking good! |
TTruckie | Posted - 24 Mar 2013 : 18:23:36 Just thinking......
I got a set of steel/alloy timing gears from Malbrad, as they don't get any lubrication from the oil system do them need a bit of grease or graphegen when fitting them? |
Woody | Posted - 19 Mar 2013 : 00:17:37 No I don't. Saab don't list them as replaceable, neither do Motomobil.
It is a question for an Engine shop. Ford got them in there somehow so you would expect them to be replaceable.
Correction:- Mis-read the parts book, Saab do list them -8810962 Water Pipe Inlet , Qty 2. Item 8 below:

TTruckie | Posted - 18 Mar 2013 : 22:40:17 has anyone tried removing and replacing the corroded steel water pipes in the back of the block?
If so.... how and what did you replace them with? |
