I'm thinking of having a batch of copper head gaskets made and wondered if it would be OK to have the bores cut at 93mm, so they can accommodate both standard and (max) over-size pistons. Or would it be a problem to use an over-bore head gasket with standard pistons? From memory bores on standard gaskets are about 92mm already, so I expect no problems, asking just to be sure.

You need really flat ground surfaces to use copper head gaskets, so they probably wont work on a std engine block thats just wanting a head skim and a new gasket. Bores really arnt that hard to open up being copper, so I would go for the std size and clamp the drill and a big flapper wheel in a vice and open up to a scribe line to suit larger bores.
Do you really want 1mm? I ask as a normal gasket is around 1.2 and most people wanting these will have pinto pistons on 1700cc cranks, these come above the block and the combination gives you about 0.6mm squish, which is close as it is.

Also, do not forget to take the plastic sticky foil off...

I have several more of these sets available, pm/mail me if interested.

Game on Melle, following this one with interest. looking good. Were these laser cut or stamped out or what ? Maybe you have answered this in a previous post, I should have checked .

My email address is :- martinranaldi@aol.com

I'm not up to speed on file types but I can open Word Documents and PDF files on my
I Pad.
In school, i can open files in Inventor, IPT or IAM.
May even be able to open CAD files.

Thanks again for sharing your skills

Cheers

I'll order a second batch on Tuesday. I can offer a set of two head gaskets (93mm) and two exhaust gaskets (44mm) to UK Saabists at £46.00 (P&P included). It might be cheaper to have them cut locally though! Please note the edges are a bit rough due to the softness of the material and will need a little smoothing with sandpaper before assembly. I believe this is a quality product, but application of these gaskets is at own risk and there is no guarantee, as this offer is strictly non-commercial.

@James Ranaldi: I lost your email address, please send it again, so I can send you the file. Any preference on file format?

File available to anyone interested, it will also be downloadable form saabv4.com (hopefully) soon.

Improved a bit on the previous drawing. Many of the holes in the standard gaskets I used as a model are useless, so they're left out now:

Also changed the view from 'bottom' to 'top' for clarity.

I have seen a single cylinder motor cycle head gasket made from copper, as far as I know these did not suffer from any issues.

Impressive

Ade, thanks for the input, I'm still studying your suggestions, would be stupid to have gaskets cut that are bound to give trouble. Does anyone here have hands-on experience with copper gaskets on a V4?

In the meantime, I've done a CAD-drawing to to have some cardboard models lase cut for test fitting:

Melle, i know very little about this, but pure copper is a very ductile material and i would expect it to creep marginally....that article mentions using copper in race engines...thing is, they get rebuilt so often that creeping over time may not be an issue...they go on to mention using either sealants or o-ring types, possibly for more "normal" usage

Great, I'll send the file when it's done.

Great response as always Melle, thanks.

Yes, I still have the original gaskets which you kindly supplied. I just liked the sound of your latest technical challenge !

It's all academic at the moment anyway as my car is going nowhere fast.

Much appreciate your offer of the CAD File, My pupils will be very interested in this.

Cheers

@Ade: I wouldn't expect copper to creep, why do you think it does? We're not talking about brass or any other alloy, but pure copper. I'm not a metallurgist, so I'm happy to learn!
