Has anyone tried these and are they any good:
The most important gaskets seem to be proper Victor Reinz stuff.

I've used a full set of these before, but they're rubbish:

Also tried these, but same poor quality:

Hard to find decent brand sets (Elring, Victor Reinz etc.) these days... Any further tips for good suppliers?

Genuine Victor Reinz head gasket sets available again on eBay: They also sell the individual gaskets separately and they have a sump gasket listed as well.

Gaskets for Classics have temporarily run out of the head gasket kit. Has anyone used the Ajusa gasket set made in Spain as a decent alternative? There reputation seems good but it will be how they make the inlet manifold gasket? It seems they use composite materials for there head gaskets.

That's what I said earlier! Have used 2 to 3 sets now, I think they are the best OE copy going at the moment.

Bought a couple sets from Gaskets for Classics, best I've seen in ages, really happy with what I got!

Yes been watching your thread with interest.

I'll put something in the projects bit as well when I get started, likely to be a while yet - lack of funds! The plan was to get the machining done on the spare engine castings before taking the Sonett off the road.

Out of interest has anybody got any details of the rare Dual twin carb inline manifold. John potter had one on his rally 96 in the '70s never suffered any damage on a rolll over unlike the swan necks. I know it won't breathe as well just I have always fancied the idea! However not much room for one twin coke in the sonett never mind two!

I have been behind the wheel of that 12:1 engine, a fiercesome beast (upset a gaggle of twitchers with it - I think Paul had to hide the car after my visit!) so I can vouch for its performance!

Collected a spare engine so I can build a milder version for the Sonett so will be using the new performance gaskets.

Peter Lumsden and Paul Darlington have had performance head gaskets made. Paul tested these at 12:1 on a rally engine. I think Peter put an add on here some time back. Inlet gaskets are a pain, like you say some are better than others. I tend to use hylomar around the inlet ports and a thicker setting sealant around the ends. I also usually place some dabs of superglue on the outer edge of the inlet faces (so you still have hylomer between the superglue and the port edge). This holds the gasket where you want it to stay and is very handy when you are opening the manifold up and need to trim the gasket to suit with a knife.

well the problem is that reinz has stopped production of their own manifold gaskets so it is probably a limited offer......
Their head gasket sets is sold without the manifold gasket and I have not been able to order any separate gaskets.

Gaskets for Classics Saab V4 version Reinz OE copy of original is on Fleabay now! 29.00. For a quality gasket set made in England it is very good value for money.You can see the inlet gasket, all the rubbery sealing bits etc. As far as I know no one is making and supplying one like this, for a sensible price.

Melle: Can't recall now - it was a couple of years ago - but I've had no cooling problems since I did it, other than the usual ones when stuck in traffic on a hot day! And I've got a re-c0red radiator to solve that one now!

As I recall there were holes where either the block or head didn't have a corresponding waterway, and none where there were matching waterways between the head and block! They definitely looked wrong! But they were cheap.....!

Hope you haven't opened up too many holes, as only a few should be open to guarantee a correct water flow. These are the holes that should be open:

Many holes in standard head gaskets are redundant (openings only in either heads or deck), god knows why they're there.

When I replaced the inlet manifold on my 96, I made the metal bits out of brass shim from a model shop. Look for the K&S metal rack - most good model shops will have it.

Equally, knowing where to get a decent gasket set from would be useful. My first port of call would probably be Malbrads - they always seem to have what I want.

I got my last gasket set of ebay, and found myself having to make extra holes in the head gasket, as they'd blocked off some of the waterways! Just as well I checked.....
