Well, we are moving house in less than two weeks and the 96 is still up on axle stands so what do we need...? Another project!
Travelled up to just North of Bristol today to pick this beauty up. First time she's been outside for 20 years! The seller was a super nice guy and we met at his Dad's place where the car was stored to generally mess about with Tractors and look at loads of cool machinery like pre war commercials, a Series 1 Landrover, 50s Fords etc...
Got the 95 loaded up on the trailer and headed back South.
There is a tarp over the screen as it was only loosely placed in and we wanted to keep the inside of the car dry. As it happened the tarp blew off as soon as I hit motorway speeds so I stopped and put a ratchet strap round it.
The reason for the screen being out is that the bottom corners need a bit of work. Not too bad but the screen has leaked leading to the foot wells rotting. A quick inspection tells me other than this though this car is solid! The only previous welding is on one of the front inner wing leading edges and it's been done well. The second bit is where the sellers Dad has sorted one of the footwells and he's done a pretty good job by the looks of it.
Engine bay, something missing there... I'll be heading up in a few weeks for trip #3 (you'll see) to collect the engine and box plus the rest of the bits off the car. The engine has done 1000 miles ish since a complete rebuild and has been stored indoors.
And finally, in it's new temporary home at work. This will be home for a couple of months until the house move is organised and I have a new space for tinkering sorted. The wings are in the back with the front panel and are like new - literally! The car has been sprayed but well - what's the name of the colour?

Nah, I want to enjoy working on it a bit longer. I'm going to flip it on its side and hope to get the floor done front to back.

Right then, a bit of progress on this one, light at the end of the tunnel now!
Not loads of pictures but been doing a but of painting - and quite enjoying it!
Got some celly mixed up from the original place I used but a shade darker which seems bang on (Derek!)
Paint still needs to be flatted back but pleased with the results and even more pleased I'm bolting bits back on!

Find a paint supplier that uses a spectrometer to get a good match for existing paint.
We used one when we had to match a new wing to a car that had been painted in a non-original colour and the match was spot on.

I accept that the lighting makes a difference but the change in colour between the old and new paint on the front bulkhead is pronounced. I was being polite. I would doubt that you intend to do any of the outer panels with that shade. Some time after I had my painting done I picked up a Saab touch up stick in Verona Brown and that was a good match. If anyone has a usable one of those now that could be useful for getting new paint made up. Matching up old paint is a bit of a black art but if a paint supplier makes something up that's wrong I don't think you should have to pay for it. It depends on who's doing the mix, I've even had some paint made up by a girl in Halfords that turned out well but not had Verona Brown done. They might have the mix in their book. I do have Du Pont and Ault & Wiborg codes for this colour if either of those ring bells with your mixer.

I noticed! Mine's out already, still not looking forward to sanding and painting. Few (light?) years off still fortunately!

Derek - you're right, not 100% happy but actually it looks loads better in real life so I would say 95 or 96% happy!
I need to find a paint supplier better suited to old stuff really. The place I have found in Plymouth has these colours listed but only in two pack. For celly they just have industrial (RAL I guess) codes so we literally match from a colour swatch.
However it looks much worse than it is due to odd lighting, I was trying out my new twin tube big mains powered light.
Rhys - to be honest I haven't gone mad with it. I have put some time and effort into the bits obviously on show but the bits that will be out of sight don't have a perfect finish. Just trying to make a nice usable car, not a show winner!

That is work to be proud of Dirtbiker, it can't be easy sanding all the engine compartment bumps and lumps!

I suspect you are not 100% happy with the colour match. I found that Verona Brown was hard to match and my paint shop had 3 goes. Wouldn't match using the paint weights in the book and they had to tint it. Wasn't perfect but good enough for me. I took a ventilation ear in for matching purposes. Cut the paint back on it to get back to original. It's a good dense paint but apparently was one of the first that Saab cut the lead in it, at least that is what I was told. Mine was a 1976 but brown came in in '75.
