After 3 years without a classic Saab, I'm now back in the fold!

I've missed getting my hands dirty and my knuckles scraped (and asking for lots of technical help)! So once I saw this 'beauty' I had to bring her home...

brief stop at Watford Gap, having given up going cross-country I rejoined the motorway, even with a dodgy clutch, no tickover and a stuck-on handbrake!

Backed it down the drive (while the missus was away) and the dog seems to have claimed ownership, not entirely sure how she managed to get herself in there...

Just to keep this post updated, thought you might like to see a couple of recent photos...

She drove out of the 'workshop/tent' for the first time in about 3 years, just need to sort some gear change isssues and I can finally take her for a spin!

Also need to sort out the interior, just a couple of ratty-looking seats in there for now, so just need to work out where I put everything, clean it up and install it - easy!

Ill check that out, the left head was quite dry (when I took the cylinder cover off to check the timing), but the motor hadnt turned over that much by then. But Ill take another look and see if the oilways are blocked

I would say a valve spring touching the oil deflection plate.

Took me nearly 15 years to diagnose this fault in the first engine I rebuilt, and I've since found it in another one too that sounded a bit rough. The plates are easily bent, so I suspect many engines that sound a bit "tappety" may suffer from this.

Sounds like it might just be one tappet?

That looks lovely Simon, one of the best colours for a 95 and the clear headlights give it an extra fresh look. Nice steady tickover too!

A couple of teething issues, but she's alive!

Despite setting the tappets (cold) she still sounds a bit rattly, I'll have to have another go...

Got so excited, decided to fit the grill and bonnet - lots more to do, but she's starting to look like a car again

Radiator is fixed, he was impressed with the perfectly round holes I made! Thankfully he only charged 45.

He also tested my spare one, but said the core leaked all over the place! To fix it was going to cost 230! So its going back in the loft, but with an added note to remind me the next time I dig it out!

Annoying, I know from experience! But should be an easy fix. The bolts should be 5/16" UNC 1/2", the one in your lower photo looks like it's too long.

broken rad

slim, possibly original spec rad

I've done it before using bolts that were too long...
The narrower one I would guess is original while the thicker one has probably been re-cored with extra capacity.
I'm looking at trailer hire websites for Swedish Day...

Small update on the pickup - splashed out on a new set of silicone hoses and fitted them to the car, along with my refurbished (just sprayed it black) radiator - all looked good, was feeling quietly confident about filling it with water until it started to pour out of the 2 lower bolt holes!?

That was the last place I was expecting, seems I over-tightened the radiotr and put 2 very neat holes in the radiator. I do have a spare (it's narrower in depth, not sure why) in the loft, but no telling what it's like under pressure (probably a bit like a sieve).

Thankfully there is a classic car radiator guy not far away, so dropping them off to fixed/tested.

Crackle looks great. Until it gets oily/dirty, then it looks scruffy.

Very nice Simon, I love a clean engine bay. Looking forward to seeing it at Swedish Day in its new guise.

Don't forget the brace bar for the alternator bracket back to the cylinder head.
