After 3 years without a classic Saab, I'm now back in the fold!

I've missed getting my hands dirty and my knuckles scraped (and asking for lots of technical help)! So once I saw this 'beauty' I had to bring her home...

brief stop at Watford Gap, having given up going cross-country I rejoined the motorway, even with a dodgy clutch, no tickover and a stuck-on handbrake!

Backed it down the drive (while the missus was away) and the dog seems to have claimed ownership, not entirely sure how she managed to get herself in there...

The photo doesn't show it, but it's the same colour as the rest of the car.

Great idea about the cross rod, maybe next time!

If you go to the trouble of doing a battery tray delete, you might as well go the whole hog and engineer in a removable cross rod. Certainly makes engine and GB removal easier and you don't scratch the paint when it goes back in. You can even make it adjustable if you like.

just seen the video of the release bearing play - JFTR, I ordered a new release arm from Onno (I had my original repaired as the hole had gone oval, but the Engineer who rebuilt my gearbox pointed out - were the holes re-machined to true specs??) his worry is if not, the release bearing won't be engaging with the pressure plate correctly

Ironically, my repaired arm was much tighter than the one from Onno, yours doesn't look far off from this new one I ordered - so save yourself the 80.00plus, plus, plus
I'm chasing clutch judder in mine, but we've narrowed it down to the flywheel face needed re-machining

Engine bay looks great, they are such a dirt/oil/grime trap, so when they're given a good clean up and fresh coat of paint they look amazing! (real pain getting the engine and gearbox back in with scratching anything!)

Battery tray delete is a great idea

Bit more progress at the weekend, more gubbins removed (steering rack put up a good fight), degreased, wire brushed and zinc primed...

Got most of the gubbins out of the engine bay

And hosed it down with some degreaser

Next its doing a bit of welding, treating the rust, rubbing it down and masking it up

I can't put it off any longer, time to paint the engine bay!

So, engine and gearbox out the way.

Gearbox was pretty filthy!

After some degrease and wiping down with some old rags

Got a question for the people that know - does this look like acceptable play in the release bearing / clutch lever?

All that sludge did a pretty good job of preserving the steel

Thanks for the kind words, it's certainly been a labour of love!

At least lockdown has given me some extra time to work on her, although being made redundant has slowed me down financially!

The suspension feels a lot firmer, it was very bouncy before (almost as if the lever arms weren't attached). When I removed the old shocks I was surprised to see how stiff they were - I was expecting them to have no oil in them at all.

My 95 had a similar shock conversion done before I got it, very useful upgrade.

It would be a good idea to get drawings made of the shock adaptors for future use. Any adjustments to the design can be added if needed. Maybe even make up a couple of sets for sale?
