Thought i would officially document my saab 96 project here,

It is a 1976 96 in green that is mostly stripped down ready for repair and modification to the shell that will allow independent front macphearson struts from a mondeo mk1 to be mounted at the rear along with the mondeo ST24 v6 mounted longitudinally where the rear seats would be, mounted to an Audi transaxle and custom driveshafts.

fuel tank, rad, and battery mounted in engine compartment, i will be adding modern touches such headlights and hopefully aircon and if i can afford it a 6 speed gearbox.

There are going to be plenty of probs ones that strike me at the mo, will be gearchange, am hoping to keep column change but think it would be difficult. I also need to make sure that the shell is modified correctly and safely and it handles properly!

I have cut out the rear little bulkhead and need to get the rear suspension out and the struts offered up and the welding can commence! However i need to get the saab in a decent location, its currently 10 miles away on my parents drive. here are some pics:

Wow, have not updated this in ages!

Things have changed quite a bit for my project, its taken quite a step but thats because i have cheated!

I brought a mid engined saab 96 project off ebay last year that had new suspension and mountings for a saab c900 engine.

I have now fitted the engine that i sourced for £20.00 I am now fitting a turbo K-jet system to it. I also need to sort out the suspension as its not quite right.

I haven't done much for awhile as have had many probs with my daily cars and its been too cold!

Anyway here is my project thread on UK Saabs:

Good to have an update.

I am in complete empathy; my project is moving on but as a snails pace and lots of tedious cleaning and tidying and measuring and test fitting but not enough action to warrant and meaty photos of solid progress.

But it is reasuring you are plugging away with it. The best things come to those that wait

Hi everyone, well have not got much further than I had awhile ago. The saab is on axle stands at the back ready for cutting but I had a crisis and have choosen a different engine.

I found a V6 audi coupe for £175 close to me. It was non running but managed to fix the engine after a few weeks. I sold the bumpers and lights for about £150 (they are sought after in audi circles) and some other bits so have everything I need for free!

My current plan is to essentially weld the front engine bay of this audi into the back of the saab as this will give me mounting points for everything. I know its not going to be as simple as that tho. I have measured up and it looks feasible, I will have to make new rear wings as they will need extending as the track on the audi is about 15cm wider.

If its not possible to do this then I can make a spaceframe mounting for the suspension or what I may still do is my older plan of using the front engine bay from a scrap 96 (would have to find one again) and then mount the engine in that. This would be better I feel as I would not need to worry about the track. But then I would need expensive custom drive shafts to mate the saab and audi hubs/flanges together.

Right now I am stripping the Audi down, but this is delayed as I have other stuff to do, change the engine in our work berlingo and fix my own daily Audi 80 as its not a happy bunny at the mo

well am slowly but surely moving the project on, car is pretty much stripped down, no door or glass, interior pretty much gone and rear axle finally sold.

Am now going to brace the car and then I can start cutting it up!

Hopefully will work out ok and I will have nice independent macpherson sturts in the back! Then it will be engine and gearbox mating and mounting!

Hi Genty, If had top wishbones that would be the case, but I am using macphearson struts out of a mondeo. so there is a bottom wishbone and then the mounting at the top of the strut. I have just brought some adjustable top mounts so I will be able to adjust camber.

My problems are where to place these mounts that will work with the wheels i decide to use. I suspect i want the bottom wishbone to be reasonably parallel to the subframe but that will have be when its finished with the engine in place etc. I am not sure how i will work it out. Deffo do not want to get it wrong! The mondeo subframe will need narrowing so will prob cut it up along with the saab and offer stuff up and see what will work.

If you are using front suspension on the rear how will you prevent the rear wheels from turning? Tie rids with spherical bearings from the steering arm on the hub to a point in the chassis to fix the wheels pointed forwards?

Yep that is pretty much how i intend to do it. This will allow me to set Toe in/out accurately too. I will use adjustable top mounts to set the camber too. My main problem is trying to decide where to place the top mounts. Ie what height is best etc.
