The 96 was running and was near able to be MOT'ED. Now it's not; I've dismantled the front of the car down to the bare block remaining. All the ancillaries will be reinstalled and replaced where needed, there is a fair bit of paint required around the 'bay but remarkably little rust; only a small area of front valance to weld at either side. The old bird must have been garaged, her nether regions are as good as one a fraction of her age.
But, I'm planning on some modifications. I have a grave dislike of the battery tray, I'd like to cut it out and move the battery rearwards- pros/cons?
I'm considering what colour to paint the engine block and struts, radiator mounts, alternator mounting. Black seems a bit meh...
Is there anything else I ought to do while I have the opportunity? Steering seemed fine, inner drive shaft gaiters look good.

Back to the 96...
Ive had less time of laterally as I've been back at work- well I never really stopped... I had a minor annoyance when the new clutch master I bought for a fiver turned out to be threaded for 3/16" pipe not 1/4" so a bit of fiddling to do there. I also had a bit of bother starting the car, after investigation it turned out not to be the ignition switch but a wiring fault where it runs through the bulkhead.
I resprayed the bonnet and got it back on, panel gaps are a bit lousy but they'll do for now. Cleaned up a pair of reversing lamps and tidied the paintwork where they will sit, de-rusted the old battery tray and painted, it will be bolted into the ns boot area. The Jetex exhaust is all on and was a pleasure to fit.
Now I just need to get the refurbed front brakes on, a better throttle linkage made up, the battery fixed down and the clutch system done and I can attempt forward progression.

Mine has had new front wings (US pattern) fitted, the side repeaters were missing, got a pair from Thailand. It's in remarkable condition as are the vast majority of remaining Datsuns; a few 100a's have appeared on ebay of late, they've all been in good condition and are worth a few bob nowadays.

The Datsun makes an interesting alternative to the '96. RWD, utterly conventional mechanically (not dissimilar to a '50's Austin) but in a 70s zoot suit!
The 96 is of course the opposite, very 40s in style but with more modern mechanical engineering.
The 260 is a rare creature even by Datsun standards!

That's great to hear! Datsuns are cool, I'd love a 260C station wagon.

Well I've been busy at work on the '96, bit by bit the last month or so now. The engine has long since been replaced, front panel and front wings had dents removed and paint/underseal applied last autumn.
I was sidelined by the purchase of a rare Datsun 120y coupe which was rapidly got back onto the road but am now back onto the '96. The front end is about complete and I've had her running with a twin choke Nikki carb. I've got another hole in the passengers footwell area to weld up and paint, then I will replace the drivers seat and the clutch master cylinder. I ought to replace the ignition bits too, I have all the appropriate Bosch OE stuff.

A fair chunk of work has been made to the '96 in recent weeks. The gearbox and driveshafts were replaced, springs reattached and front suspension reassembled. So the green machine is back on four wheels again for the first time in 18 months #128522;
In the last month I've cleaned the block, replaced the oil pump and fitted a twin choke manifold, new clutch and water pump. On Thursday I hope to have time to finally get the engine back in situ. Looking forward to time spent playing about with carbs soon!

I'm driving to Holyhead towards the end of the month, may be able to stop by then. Send me an email at saabv4[at]saabv4[dot]com and I'll reply, the PM system on this forum isn't very reliable.

Great! Give me a shout next time you're about, I could use some help fitting a new clutch- never done it before and my old mate who's a mechanic has left the area (probably fed up with me picking his brains all the time!)

If you come 'upwards' on the M4 or A46 any time I'd appreciate a bit of encouragement, the manlab is still near Stroud.

I have a copy of the SAH Catalogue with kit that included a Nikki Carb conversion, There was included with it an article on a V4 with said conversion. Have to dig it out.
Just searched and Peter Christy posted the article 2011:-
