I have posted a small bit about this already but didn't think this was going to turn into a project.
My neighbor alerted me to a 96 that he had spotted about 4 miles from home. It had been sitting in a field at the rear of a small village garage. My first impressions were that the car was in a bad way. A chat with the owner and he told me that it was a project that he never got around to starting. It was driven into the field about 3 years previous and that's where it stayed.
3 of the tyres were perished, the brakes seized but the engine turned free. I then spotted a Weber 34ich and then the big surprise..the engine is a 1700cc lump.
Less than an hour after loading the car it had 3 beter wheels with tyres fitted and a sticky front caliper freed (tapped the brake pad and it freed up)
Plugs out, poured a little oil into the rocker covers and a few turns of the engine by hand. New fuel pipes. Plugs back in, new battery fitted and fingers crossed. On the 5th churn it fired up and run sweet (even with old fuel) but the fuel pump (older style with the removable cover/filter) started to drip then flow. A new (good 2nd hand) pump fitted and she was ticking over very well. I had a drive up and down the farm track and it drives really well. The gears are smooth and the brakes even work now.
The car started life with light grey paint but was re-painted yellow sometime in the 1990's. The body is surprisingly good. A few blisters and the door bottoms need attention. The interior is in tatters and is made up using 3 or 4 different colour trim.
The charge light is on all of the time and some of the other electrics don't work. The exhaust was damaged during loading so I have to fit another.
I will do the obvious work and then see if I can get an MOT on it.

The inner wing tops were covered in sound deadening and it was soaking. So wet there were plants growing in it so that was the first thing to come out..

Good work - Grey!

I really am split on the colour...always liked grey V4's and 2strokes but really like the brightness of the yellow. I even had thoughts about orange today but it will either be yellow or grey.

Very good progress John

More "progress" I'm now at teh stage where I can get to the areas that need welding..there are a few more than originally thought but nothing terrible. I have replaced a chunk of the windscreen surround that was damaged by someone fitting a aerial..it had rotted from the inside out. The gearbox and air box will come out tomorrow and the passengers door will also get removed (I have good doors that should save on re-build time). I'm having sills made at the local fabrication shop.

John, Tamworth is in the Midlands, you know, the one near to Birmingham.
ZagatoPosted - 14 Mar 2017 : 19:52:49
He says in his 96 wanted post that he is in the UK from December.

Rhys..If you are in NZ surly finding a solid car in Oz would be easier?

Looks like your order book is full John, let Rhys have it, I already have one to play with. Rhys will give it proper attention, for me it's if I can get three years out of it then use the parts for mine... I'll put the 3k back in the bank... Joking
RhysNPosted - 14 Mar 2017 : 15:53:29
John, just let me havi as it is right now, and I can save you the worry of the colour :)
ZagatoPosted - 14 Mar 2017 : 08:17:04
Grey . That has got to be so rare for a J Reg! Grey is a great colour though.

Do the welding, get her running with MOT and spray her Indian Yellow and I would be tempted as a rough hack to play with

I have been looking for another 96 that has been welded and is mechanically OK as much as can be expected so that I can respray it myself in Indian yellow to learn how to spray and have one just for fun and some events that I don,t need to worry about and can learn on. I wouldn,t spray it in two pack as I am not worried about finish and it would be easier to respray any areas that need attention.

Keep your thoughts coming. The interior and engine bay are original grey but both will want a fresh coat of paint so that won't be the decider. The original, dark red, interior has long gone with just the rear cards and shredded seat left so the interior will be changed to suit (I have a green and dark brown interior I could fit)

If the interior and engine bay have never been repainted I would choose grey because it saves a lot of time/ work. If you're just tarting it up for resale I would also choose grey as "originality" apparently benefits desirability. If it were mine and it needed a complete paint job I would consider a completely different colour, perhaps not a Saab colour although there are plenty nice shades to choose from.

Quite a big fan of grey on older cars too It instantly puts them into a certain era without seeing a No plate.
Paint choice is such a pain. People like original colours when purchasing, but they're not necessarily the preferred choice when you have an option to respray. I would love to paint Betsy the colour of the Beetle in my 'topic' but can you imagine how many frowning brows there would be "oooh it's not an original colour- off with his head"
Be brave and go for what you want.
