Hi,

A chance encounter at work with a retired vehicle trimmer has led to me putting down a deposit on having the seat covers in the 96 and the foam replaced.
I am aware that there isn't a 100% match on the velour (if that's right word) and I would like something harder wearing but original so I am going to go with what I believe is a type of MB Tex as seen here:

Also seen in here:

The chap doing the work is going to get some samples from his usual supplier but he is happy for me to hunt around too as I am fussy and have an exact image in my head of what this will look like. I have done a bit of research online but am struggling to find my way as I am a trimming novice. I need a supplier of MB Tex as in the pictures and also advice on piping. The trimmer doesn't recommend using PVC as it may crack with time but it looks like this was used originally. Any thoughts on this or recommended suppliers of PVC piping that will last?

Cheers in advance and any info appreciated!

Thanks Derek, I have sent a sample of the original vinyl off to Martrim and requested samples as close as possible in both normal vinyl and basket weave.
I'll let you know how I get on!

Have a look here. If you are only going to do the top of the seat squab and the front of the back rest they have lots of other "normal" vinyl for the rest of the covers, in a big range of colours.

Also, I wondered about that chrome strip on the US car too - hadn't noticed that before!

Thanks for the feedback and good to hear positive responses. I want it to look original at a glance but be harder wearing and in my mind an original option as I'm sure this was standard on US cars as stated by Melle.

Derek - I'll look into the Beetle material. When you say old what year-ish are we talking? I have owned a few early seventies Beetles and Bays and memory suggests the material in these is a little bit "brittle" if that makes sense? (have just acquired a beetle but that's another story...! And it's got no interior to check!)

It seems MB Tex refers to lots of different patterns and not just the "textured" finish as I first assumed. This site seems comprehensive but is in the States - I would really like something UK based so samples are easily available:

MB dealerships also might be worth a look but I think German aftermarket suppliers a more likely affordable bet.

I'm seeing the trimmer again tomorrow so I'll let you know if his supplier (in Wolverhampton I think) has anything suitable.

Cheers

I think vinyl upholstered seats were standard US spec? Also 95 vans had vinyl seats.

There is a similar material to MB Tex used in VW Beetles, the old ones. This should be available from upholsterers who retrim Classic Beetles. Also seen elsewhere, like Lotus Europa I believe. Getting the exact colour you want might be difficult, but German MB trimmers should be able to supply what you need, but maybe too expensive.
USA 96's seem to have got a lot of vinyl centred seats like this.

I think MB Tex is a great idea, it's what I want for my 95 as well. I wouldn't be surprised if MB dealerships could supply you with MB Tex, I don't think they discontinue parts at all at MB. Could be a pricey affair though!

Many retrims kill a vehicle for me sadly with bright strong colours, including non standard creams but that looks very subtle.

My father had an early 1971 beige 99 with very similar plasticky trim and it looked good, We wondered if it was original and still do as I am pretty sure I have seen others like it. It may have been re trimmed within it,s age of 9 years old however if it was left out in the sun.

I always wondered why the LHD cars had a silver strip under the dash and we didn,t!
