Dear All,

I am in need of a new fuel sender for my '68 V4 (see photo below), but am a little confused as to which sender to order. I have located this one; does it seem like the correct unit to replace the old?

Have any users assessed how much fuel is left in the tank when the low level light comes on? How about at the other end of the scale, how much fuel do you have to put in to have the gauge read full? Sounds as if there might be scope for changing the angle of the float arm.

Same tweaks, yes. I can't say about the gauge-reading change that Gorselands notes (noted also by green96V4) as I've not had the opportunity to run the car much. I didn't have any problems whatsoever with the install.

I can report the same behaviour for the VDO 226 162, I've finally received mine and fitted it. it stays full longer then (fairly rapidly) drops to empty with the low warning light coming on.

I figure it's better than no gauge!

Did you do the same mods and tweaks mentioned by Gorselands? Does your gauge react the same as his? Did you have any problems?

With the VDO sender I measured the swing radius at about 195 -200 mm from pivot to centre of float and when fitting angled it back slightly to avoid the breather pipe. You can't angle it more than a few degrees or it rests on the back of the tank that is scalloped for the spare wheel. Cut the pivot arm 20mm longer than needed for adjustment. The wiring for the VDO is different - Grey wire to S, Brown wire to small terminal (low warning light) - (minus) terminal to earth. Shortening the VDO float arm reduces its travel meaning the gauge will remain on full longer (full tank) and show empty sooner - leaving more in reserve. Still I can live with that. My part number is different but they both look the same - Europe,USA part numbers.

Thanks all; very helpful responses and I'll be eager to see how the VDO 226 162 does. I had seen the links posted by melle, but it wasn't clear to me that someone had actually had a successful replacement. Gorselands' specific advice about the float arm is much appreciated.

The 10 - 180 ohms unit will be fine ( the fuel gauge actually measures 3-180 ohms) What you need to look at is the swing radius of the float arm. There is a baffle in the tank 200mm from cutout for sender unit (centre) and a breather pipe before that. On the old unit you will see the float arm has a swing radius of 150mm - that clears everything. The one you refer to seems to have an adjustable pivot point so should be fine, probably does not have low fuel warning light.
