I kissed my 1973 96 goodbye a few days ago to make room for a new project. This 1969 95.

My 96 had more rust than I wanted to deal with as well as more other problems, and I got a little overwhelmed keeping it up and planning what to fix next. This 95 is mostly rust free with no holes in the body other than in the footwell for the rear jump seat.

Its biggest problem is that it is a complete mess cosmetically. Whatever the previous owner did when repainting was obviously wrong as most of the paint has crackled. The window rubber has all dried out (except for the windshield which was replaced a few years ago and has new rubber). I would love to hear from anybody who has put new rubber on their 95, where to find good replacement rubber. Most of the interior vinyl is in a sad state. The previous owner had the front seats reupholstered and the dash pad replaced, but the door cards etc. are pretty sorry looking.

The transmission whines loudly in 4th, but only very faintly in other gears (you have to really listen for it). The previous owner said new bearings were put in it about 20 years ago. It doesn't rattle like the trans in my 96 did, but something must not be right with it.

Anyway I'll be posting updates as I move along. I'm not really planning to restore, just to freshen it up and make it look decent again. I would appreciate any tips on finding replacement window rubber, or carpeting, interior bits etc.

Thanks!

Engine is out. Had a hell of a time removing the starter motor, and I hope I didn't damage the input shaft, the transmission fell down about an inch when I pulled the engine out, despite the wood wedged under it.

Thanks. I've pretty much got everything disconnected now, so I'll see about raising the engine out tomorrow hopefully.

I did notice there is a tiny bit of play in the timing pulley, maybe a millimeter of in-out play, is this something I should be worried about? Or is this acceptable? I also noticed the fan pulley has a very slight wobble.

From within the cab, there's a big rubber grommet in the bulkhead under the floor mats you'll have to remove to get access with a socket + extension.

After draining the rad, put a piece of cardboard between the engine and the rad and tie them together, saves quite a bit of time and spilt coolant. No matter how well you drain the rad, lots of coolant will still be left in the block. If you're planning on removing the gearbox as well I would lift them together. If you only remove the engine, slacken the rear gearbox mount to avoid damage to the rear gearbox cover.

It's a 99 radiator from what I was told. I found a plastic tube to help drain it without spilling coolant everywhere.

I'm pulling the engine to replace the crank seal, so the gearbox is staying in the car, how do I loosen the gearbox mount?

Thanks

If you have anti freeze in (Texas?) please drain and retain your coolant. It can be a pet killer.

If you have a piece of garden hose about a foot long you can slip that over the drain plug and route it out to ground . that'll take care of most of the water but yes, there's usually some mopping up to do.

Preparing to pull the engine. Anybody have hints, or warnings for things to watch out for?

Also, I'm not quite sure what to do about draining the radiator. It looks like it will just drain into the under pan if I unplug it. Is that just how it goes?

I stopped by a car meet and just by extreme coincidence met another 95 there!

I also discovered that the aftermarket carb (Holley 1940) the previous owner put on my car has robbed it of most of its low end torque, as the route to the meet contains a long, steep uphill section that my 96 could handle with ease, but this car lost a lot of steam climbing it. I've found out this used to be a popular carb for racing, but others have told me it's bad for daily driving because of the same issues I'm having, which are apparently typical. So I'll probably go back to the original or a Weber single barrel.

Decided to paint the black accents on the soccer balls, I think it makes a huge difference in looks.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. Will order new rubber before I start stripping the car.
