Today I have been removing the passenger side front suspension from my 96, and the only part which is still attached to the car is the upper wishbone. The upper rear carrier bolt seems to be connected to the gearbox stabiliser bar, and it is difficult to see what is going on as this is located under the battery tray.
No mention is made of this in the relevant sections of either the Haynes or Inter-europe manuals

On inspection only 2 of the screws are fitted, and of course they are the most difficult ones to access being the lower and rearmost. I can just get a screwdriver on these, but there is not sufficient space to get my hand in and get some purchase. Somewhere I have a cranked screwdriver, but it seems to have gone AWOL. It is so frustrating wasting time hunting for tools rather than getting on with the job

Thanks Woody, those pics in the link make it much clearer. All of the nuts & bolts had a squirt of duck oil a couple of weeks ago, and again today- but not the screws as I didn't know about them until now.
I can see why some people go for the removable battery tray modification

There is a stabiliser secured to the steel bracket bolted to the transmission. One end has nuts and washers either side of the rubber bushes. The base is secured by four pozi- screws to an inverted cup. Inside the cup is the bolt which retains the rear side wishbone bush carrier lower side. As you may have discovered these bolt go into captive nuts welded inside the turret. Copious releasing agent and judicious leverage to avoid snapping bolt or ripping the captive nut from turret.
