I've stripped down my spare gearbox to rebuild it, and I've read lots of old posts on here and a few elsewhere.
This gearbox has done about 100000 miles, when it was in my car it was noisy in third and getting noisy in fourth, the change and freewheel were working well, the oil when I stripped it was clear and golden, and a bit stinky. No nasty swarf on the drain plug. It comes from a 1972/73 car, so has the oil catcher, 10 roller freewheel, nylon speedo drive.

The pinion shaft nut was totally slack and the primary shaft nut was only finger tight. The only serious wear I can find relates to the pinion shaft moving up and down because the rear bearing is worn.

I need to replace all the bearings, anyone bought these recently?
Gaskets and seals from Malbrad.
Presume the woodruff key is standard?
Are the speedo drive and spacer available anywhere?
Does anyone have experience of the improved tab washers and nuts for pinion and primary shafts?
Has anyone found suitable alternatives to the shim that sits between 3rd gear and the bearing?

Can you spot anything else in the photos? the sun gear shown is borderline, a little pitting starting to show.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff

I believe it's the requirement to register for UK VAT if you sell under 120 pounds worth of stuff into the UK. Above that you can send it VAT free, we then get walloped for whatever handling charge the forwarder wants to add to do the clearance and bill the VAT.
My brother in law is a forwarder and does clearances for a living, he has really expanded his business since Brexit. Ho Hum...

The 716757-1 bearing is certainly available from the Saab Klubben. I bought one from them last year. Though, because of Brexit red tape horses***, The Saab Kubben cannot now ship to indviduals in the UK, you simply have to buy your parts through Bill Jones at Saabits. For reasons that I know nothing about, they can ship to a company in the UK, but not an individual. Bill can arrange to have it shipped directly to a UK address, but payment goes through him.
It works very well, I've availed myself of this service 3 times in the last year or so.

Bill should get a knighthood for services to the Saab community.

just wading in on this (I had my gearbox rebuilt during Covid for a 3rd time! - this time we got it right!!)

Saabklubben have 716757-1 listed for 995SEK (£80ish) - not sure if the Swedish owners club have figured out the shipping to the UK-post-Brexit debacle yet

Larry Lautenschlager in South Carolina rebuilt my 'box - with Watchmaker-like precision, fantastic guy, former Bosch engineer and has set up Bosch factories all over the world.

I remember he went down a different route with the whole shim set up and used different thicknesses of snap ring to set the backlash tolerance correctly - all a bit above my expertise, so I trusted him to get me a quiet gearbox - which he did!

I know the SKF3305 is the same dims, it's available with the snap ring groove, I think this is what Larry ordered for my 'box, groove is in a different place to the 240426, but he solved the issue with the previously mentioned snap ring thicknesses

I also did this spreadsheet when I was tracking down all these elusive bearings

Hope some of this helps

I have already sent a cursory message to the company asking for an all-in price including postage, awaiting a reply but suspect the company is closed until after the festive season.

It will be interesting to compare your local visit with the response from Dublin. Once I get a response, I will update the thread.

Oh yes, by the way, your car looks very smart in the book "Saab 92-96V4, The Original Saab, Complete Story" by Lance Cole. The book was a Christmas present and is excellent informative reading.

Yes, keep us all posted.

I was gobsmacked when someone showed me the photo of my car, in Lance Cole's book. I had to get a copy myself then, of course!

This may be of interest and certainly a lot cheaper than the French quoted price: https://www.sp-spareparts.com/en/p/240426-skf

Their HQ and Europe supply location is in Dublin, Eire and a decent no nonsense company by the looks of it.

Regards.

Richard.

Melle
I think I was doodling on the internet a while back, with the 240426 number, and their name came up.
I'll check out these links you've posted.
Have a good New Year.

ps The link you have to the bearing is the wrong number, it's 240426, not 24026.
240426 turns up nothing. That's the strange bit, if SKF have no reference for this bearing, how can the French outfit order it from them?

pps I have just found an authorised SKF agent in a town 10 miles from my house. I will go and see them in the new year!

Andy, any particular reason you looked in France? Have you already tried any of the UK SKF distributors? https://www.skf.com/group/support/find-a-distributor Here's the product page for 240426 wher you can download a technical data sheet: https://www.skf.com/group/products/rolling-bearings/roller-bearings/spherical-roller-bearings/productid-24026%20CC%2FW33

Just thought I'd update information on this thread, with reference the pinion bearing 240426.
I have again been in touch with the French outfit, 123Roulement, at the end of November. Unfortunately all their responses ended up in my Spam box, so I only saw them today.
They are now quoting......wait for it........£262 inc 20% VAT, with unknown post Brexit charges, on doubt on top, plus shipping.
An almost unbelievable cost.

To be fair, they phoned me within 10 minutes of my E mail to them going out. That's what I calls service.
The lady confirmed that they get these bearings from SKF directly.
She also said that since they were being ordered from SKF on an SKF part number they would (should?) have the circlip groove in the appropriate place.

The price might of course come down if a batch of 10 or 20 was ordered.

I wonder if there is some way of getting in touch with someone in SKF to confirm if this is DEFINITELY the bearing we need.
Still can't get over the 262 quid++

ps Is the UKSAABS site down?

Sorry I've not had a chance to update this for a while.
Thanks for all the helpful comments.

To keep it short, I now have a Luxury gearbox and clutch! I keep going out on test runs.

I get no funny whining noises in any gear and no graunching when I select first or reverse. The clutch action is silent. I had a bit of trouble getting the clutch to disengage at first, but it's fine now.

Pinion nut.
I use Loctite 270 with folding washer. (old washer and nut)
And Loctite 243 on the other 2 nuts
New pinion nut, Loctite 243

standard ones:
There are 2 types, washers and nuts
One type through about 1975
And one after 1975.

New washer (1975-1980):

Q:
"One little tip I gained from this process is to stick the shaped washer over the circlip on the primary shaft with grease,
it stops the washer moving out of position when it's being assembled."

Is not that obvious? ;) (grease)
Good suggestion.

It must have clearance between 1 2 3 & 4 gear (approximately 0.35)

Q:
"I got backlash or between 0.1mm and 0.14mm"
I would put it 0.15-> 0.20 on a used final gear.
Even more about pinion went further back than the marking.

How have you measured the piong depth?
Pinion location, measured from the center crown wheel.
That measure is important.
