When buying a thermostatic switch for a rad fan, what temperature range would I look for, Ive found one that switches on at 90C and off at 80C, would this be OK???????.

The one I picked up this morning is a bit different to yours Derek,it doesnt have the adjusting knob just a very small plastic screw. It also has a relay on it and the probe goes THROUGH the radiator fins near the top pipe. It is a Kenlowe switch so I think they may have changed a few things. Cant fit it at the moment as its chucking it down with rain so I am going to the Swedish Day with a hole in the rad and a manual switched fan.

As you can see, I made up a plate which I mounted on the support stay using the 2 existing screws. Wiring now tie wrapped underneath. Kenlowe says that a relay isn't needed so I didn't use one. Did add the override switch under the dash. The switch/adjuster block is rather exposed there and doesn't look very neat or "original" so I made a hole in a black aerosol lid and mounted it inside that. IMO it looks good and also hides the wiring connections at the bottom. Cheap too!

Have ordered a kenlowe switch from Abingdon MG and pick it up tomorrow.

As John says, the sensor pipe goes between the rad pipe and the hose. Kenlowe do a small hard-ish rubber protector that slips onto the tube to stop it being squeezed flat. Imagine the shape of a speed hump with a groove down the middle. Kenlowe will send you one if you give them a call. Even using this the clip has to be TIGHT.
I haven't tried a home made seal but shouldn't be too difficult. Might take a couple of tries. Using inner tube, I've got some bits of lorry tube, I'd probably make one up using rubber cement.
The sensor bulb tucks back into the rad pipe i.e. doesn't dangle into the hose. It would be facing into the flow and would probably wobble about and crack the pipe.

Mine uses an adjustable one too.

I will answer that for you..inside. You will have to do something about where the thin pipe enters the radiator pipe..it can leak there and if you tighten the clip too much it can damage the thin copper pipe.
My suggestion is to find the inner tube from a mountain bike..cut 2 X 30cm sections..fit one over the top "intake" pipe on the radiator..lay the thin pipe copper pipe on the rubber then feed the second bit of inner tube over the top to hold it in place. Re-fit the radiator top hose over it all,it will be a snug fit but should work..this method protects the thin copper pipe and also creates a water tight seal.

Thanks for the reply Derek, just one question, does the sensor fit inside or outside of the rad/pipe?????

My fan shown on the rad thread isn't a Kenlowe but I used their sensor and adjustable switch plus override. Easy to do and I didn't have solder in a boss for a fixed temp switch. You're in control when you can set the switch on temp.
