Hello again. Someone told me there are three different types of hub on Saab 96s and certain steering wheel companies, for instance Moto-Lita, only make two. Does anyone have any experience of sourcing a steering wheel boss kit for a mid 1970s V4? Any helpful advice appreciated!

I have little knowledge of two strokes, and I recollect someone saying the steering column was slightly narrower on early cars. I think from 1968+ they were all the same spline though the 68/9 ones were threaded for the standard steering wheel cover. Moto-Lita did two hubs one without the horn contact ring and one with contact ring, though the latter would fit an early column anyway - 68/69 as the horn was operated via the wiper control arm.
The Troll has the SS&R Moto-Lita, though I did have a Mountney steering wheel in it for a while which had only six screws to secure the wheel to the hub. It was 13.5- 14in and would not be nice for parking as the Troll has the early fast rack ..
Moto-Lita Hubs appear on Ebay.
I may be able to post a pic of the Moto-Lita hub later. My broadband service has gone down( Orange LiveBox- waiting two weeks now ) so I am using Dial-up at the moment and it takes ages to do anything.

Thanks for that Woody. If you have the code number of the Mota-Lita boss, that would be useful too.

Thanks for that useful info and great pics guys!

I'd gone to bed by the time I saw the postings though - which is probably for the best cos it kept me away from Flea-Bay...

BTW I can sympathise with your net connection woes Woody, we're still on dial-up - I reckon Two-Roos Cattle Station 1800km West-of-Nowhere will get broadband before we do. Something to do with line rim-pairing apparently, which sounds like either someone's having a laugh or something we shouldn't be talking about on a car forum..!

Bodger's solution: must be possible to machine the centre of a standard steering wheel to use as a hub for a Moto-Lita.

I have tried that and it didn't really work well. You will need to weld it together with something or else it's simply to small. It's only a small aluminum ring which is cast into the plastic. This is for the older V4 70-76 wheel, the newer I haven't tried.
But why not just buy a new hub from Moto-Lita? I know they're expensive, but it must be the ideal solution...
Regards, Mads.

I know a chap who's converted the newer type into a boss for an imitation Moto-Lita. Nice £5,- job.

I know this is a older topic, but I have Moto-Lita steering wheel with boss and don't know how to wire it. The wire you can see in the picture above is the earth wire (I think). But where is the positive wire (that comes through the steering wheel) goes to?

The middle wire is the earth wire from the horns. The horns have a live feed directly to them and they complete the circuit to earth via the steering wheel push button. In your picture, the middle earth wire connects via the spring assembly to the other earth cable with the red spade on it. You push the button so both earth wires join and make contact and 'beep..beep' all the way home

Thank you. So I can discard the black wire and just connect the red one?

The Moto-Lita boss has just one wire (earth), as you can see in the picture. If I connect it to the Moto-Lita horn cap the horn does not work, so apparently I am missing something.

The horn button is connected into the earth circuit for the horns. When you press the button you complete the circuit and the horns should toot. If you disconnect the two wires from the button and short them together the horn should also toot. If no result, first check the fuse. Next, with a meter, check the wire at the flexi joint.

Woody wrote this some time back "Do a continuity test on the black earth wire under the steering wheel to the earth wire at the horn. The black wire under the wheel goes down the column to a multiplug located to right of column. This can give poor continuity. Test horn by alternative power and earth to body to prove horn ok."
