Ladies and Gentlemen of the 96 Community.

My front tyres have been wearing a little unevenly, so I thought I would have my tracking checked.
I've now been to 3 different places around East Central Scotland, and nobody can check my wheel tracking, due to the inability to hang the measuring device, on the back wheels. This being due to the fact that the wheels are partly obscured by the wheel arches.

Apparently older, simpler (less precise) systems that only attach to the front wheels could be used, but I've so far drawn a blank trying to find someone in central Scotland, who has such an "older" system.

Does anyone in the Jock contingent, have any ideas?

If this draws a blank, I'll have to remove my rear wings to have this done. Bit of a pain!

Regards

Andy

Well I have finally found a place that can do 4 wheel alignment, with a laser system.
Note that when I first went there, the manager, as usual, told me that he couldn't hang his measuring devices on the rear wheels. Well I asked if I could have a go. With a bit of fiddling, by entering the bar at ground level, and turning it through 90 degrees, it was perfectly possible to get the device, on the rear wheel.
See photos below.
The company is Farmer Autocare, though for our southern brethren, I'm afraid they only seem to exist in Scotland. I have posted a photo of the name of the measurement system to help perhaps to find other tyre installers that use this system.

When they were originally checked a couple of weeks ago, the front to rear were out a bit, and the front wheels were slightly out. One wheel was slightly toed out, one toed in.
Having lined everything up, I was back yesterday for a re-check, which showed everything to still be OK.
As a matter of interest, when I brought the car back from being checked a couple of weeks ago, I got my trusty Heath Robinson measuring device out(two very flat pieces of wood, with metal extensions on them, strapped onto the wheels and levelled - then measured with a good steel tape, front and back of front wheels)

This showed a toe in of 2 mm, so pretty good really. Book says 0+/- 1mm I think.

Now to watch the tyre wear over the next 5 to 10K miles.

That's good to hear. I have my cars aligned every five years or so, also depending on mileage. Front wheel camber adjustment on my 96 has maxed out ages ago (no shims left), the car badly needs new springs.

I think my camber is slightly out on one side, but I don't want to start farting about with those shims!!

I'm off to Ireland next week, for a week, including going to the Kilbroney Calssic show in Rostrevor, County Down, then when we come back I've got various Classic shows to go to in Scotland, as well as one down in Yorkshire.(Ripon)

Fiddling around with shims can wait till the winter!.
I want to get the back axle out to change all the bushings, and do a bit of cleaning up and painting in the axles tunnel, so I'll have a go at fiddling with shims, at that time.

I always bring a stack of different thickness shims and have the tyre place swap them out if needed. Enjoy Ireland!
