I have been messaged by someone in NZ who has said that the gearbox in a 96 V4 is "completely stuffed" and needs to be replaced because of a stiff shift. Any thoughts anyone?

Need a bit more detail than a "stiff shaft". Is he for example talking about the drive shaft that mates with the engine? The gear change shaft? Some other shaft actually inside the gearbox.?

If it's the gearchange shaft, as Deggsie has asked, the RHD and LHD systems have some differences, LHD linkage is simpler than RHD.
Considering that NZ drives on the left, as we do, car is probably RHD.

Perhaps get him to post here directly, and put up some photos.
If he's new to the forum, and can't post photos yet, send them to one of us by E mail, to post the photos for him.

Related question. Were SAAB 96's ever sold officially in NZ?

Another possibility if the heater valve has been leaking and car not used a lot, the selector shaft in the transmission cover can seize up. Need more info to be able give an informed deduction.

It has all become a bit mysterious! The fellow involved is now not replying to emails or messages, so you have all the information that I have. More, if any comes to light.
note that it's supposed to be "stiff shift" not shaft.

Ah, sorry, that was me that started talking about shaft, instead of shift.
Let us all know if he gets back in touch, and we'll try and help him.

I do not know if the 96 was ever sold in NZ through dealerships, but I do remember that a 96 (or 93) came from NZ to attend an Intsaab in Sweden years ago.

Having not long moved to the UK I am pretty confident in saying that the V4 wasn't officially distributed. There are a number in NZ, mostly private imports, some quite recent. I do know of one out of NZ (95) that did Peking to Paris, and another that attended some meetings in Europe before being shipped to NZ. This one is a bit of a mystery to us all.
I have some recollection of being told of limited imports of strokers as a market test, but I couldn't be confident of the veracity of that. The stroker I had in NZ in 73 was one I can't remember of it's origin.

Well, I have had an update from NZ. The "boss" in the garage has told the customer that all the hardening has worn from every gear from lack of lubrication and that's why the shift is stiff. He has persuaded him he needs a totally new gearbox, and arranged to buy one for him from somewhere on this side of the world. When I asked the younger mechanic if there was anything else other than a stiff change, he has said no. I am no mechanic other than what I have been taught along the way, but I suspect that if quote "all the hardening has been worn off every gear" it would be howling like a tribe of banshees?? Seems as though someone is going to be paying a whole lot of money for mis-diagnosis?

That sounds very likely. I would rather suspect the clutch, especially a worn clutch release fork or misaligned clutch release bearing. If the box is still in the car (which I suspect it isn't) I would start by adjusting the gear change mechanism.

Or a torn rear engine mount, then the gearbox drops and rests on the floor and the alignment of the mechanism may be off.

From what I can derive from the emails, they haven't taken the box apart! Yet he "knows" that all the hardening is gone. In NZ there is a beer called Tui. Their advertising has all sorts of statements, followed by "Yeah right". Very applicable in this case I suspect.
