Maybe someone stamped it in to mark it as a 1.7l engine, but it's not an original Saab/ Ford marking. You have to look at the engine code to be fairly sure (engine could have been overhauled) what you have:
EY = 1.5 HC EX = 1.5 LC MY = 1.7 HC MX = 1.7 LC
Removing the oil pan and looking at the crank (which has either a '1.5' or '1.7' mark) gives absolute certainty about the engine size.

Thanks for your help.I should have said that the 1 7L mark is actually cast into engine blolck,not something that was added later.It is located on the opposite side of block to the engine number and is close to the bellhousing.I think I will have to try and measure the stroke,as you advised,thanks anyway
