| Got the old heads off...
And bolted the nice new clean ones on...
Only thing is - the plate between the manifold and the carb - isn't wide enough (the holes on plate are 60mm apart, centre to centre). The carb is a Weber 34ICH and will fit the studs - but does anyone have a wider plate?
I know I can always bolt on my dirty old manifold, but thought I'd ask you guys first. |

| The apperture on your new inlet manifold does seem to be rather small. Though I can see the stud gap is greater. See pic below manifold at left is 1969 and the one at right 1970. When I go in the garage tomorrow I shall measure the appertures and the stud gaps. I wonder if it is a 1975+ manifold for Solex carb as it is listed separately in the parts book.

| You're right - I'm sure this of later model - I have no idea what happened to the breather plate that must have been attached to it - which is annoying - as it means I can't finish the rebuild.
Great idea with the dish/parts-washer, wish I had one - does it work? Guess I'll take my old one to college tomorrow and use their parts washer, but it isn't that good, better than nothing I suppose.
If anyone has a later breather plate - can they let me know? I assume I need it for the servo etc?

| That was a before photo, and I do not think it was that successful. The Weber 34ICH fit this new manifold but not the original that you took off? | Edited by - Woody on 30 Mar 2008 11:17:29 | |

| It fitted the old manifold, but I didn't realise the 2 manifolds were different, so got the spare one cleaned up. I think the weber fits both - as it has slots in the base, rather than just holes - I'll go and have a look to be sure. | |

| You have the option of filing one of the holes on the adaptor plate to get it to fit. I vaguely remember one of my plates as having a slot. Will have a look and get back shortly. | Edited by - Woody on 30 Mar 2008 12:43:14 | |

| Checked the 4 inlet manifolds in the garage and they all have 34mm intake bore and the stud centres are 60mm. All the intermediate plates have the hole on the side of the take-offs extended. The left hand manifold is off my 1st V4 a 1969 deluxe and did not have power servo brakes.

| Thanks for checking Woody - I'll see how much filing my plate would need - my only worry is that the intake bores wouldn't line-up. Also, the plate has 2 metal shims - are these important, or would the normal card gaskets be OK? | |

| Card gaskets I quess should be ok. A little mis-alignment on a standard engine shouldn't cause a problem. Have you got the linkage sorted? | |

| I did cobble together a linkage - but I've ordered a couple of ball ends and some threaded rod to do a proper job and hopefully make it more responsive. | |

| Just been out working on the car - putting the exhaust back on, plugs in etc. I think the simplest option, is to clean up the original manifold - and hopefully not damage the gasket, taking off the new one.
Meanwhile - I took a look at the heads I've just taken off - are the exhaust ports meant to be sunk in like this!?!
I was getting only 50% compression on cylinder 4 - and it does look very oily and the valve is the most sunken of all. Weirdly the valves themselves look quite new.

| I would say no they are not. What do the valve heights look like with the heads on a flat surface? The tops of the valve stems should roughly be the same height. It will be intersting to see the valve seats once the valves have been removed. | |
