| Thanks Derek.
My car was first registered in Germany so it was probably fitted from new. Daft arrangement as you loose the use of the glove box.
I will keep it original but would also like to fit a Pod underneath.

| Well things moved on. I found an old radio/minidisc unit in my garage - think it came out of my old Impreza - anyone remember minidiscs? I still have some too and and a portable player. It had a good radio so I have decided to install that - wonder of wonders I even found the instructions so I can manage the wiring no bother. Main problem is finding how to "hang" it under the dash - will be in the same place as in Derek's picture. I bought a universal under-dash pod from Halfords today but its too long, so will have to browse around and see what else might work. Any ideas welcome!

| Cannot get into photobucket at the moment, but I used small angle brackets secured to the side bolts in the radio casing and mounted to underside of dash driver's side. If necessary you can take a support from the rear of radio to the support bracket of the steering column.

| Thanks Woody - as ever a great source of help! I am going to do the same fitting and see what it looks like.

| Ah yes saw those - they are identical to the ones Halfords sell. The main difficulty is that they are too wide for the space available to the right of the steering column as in Woody's picture. Thanks anyway!

I had one of those on my '84 90.

and this one, marked "Philips":

| Converted universal pod in my 96.
(Pic taken from old 'marktplaats.nl'-ad)
Original Saab pod that used to sit in my 95 (with built-in iPod dock in ash tray).

| It's not too bad indeed, although it's broken. Got it for free from a friend's bin...

| This is the set-up I have in my '72 96. I cut out the radio mounting bracket for a DIN-sized modern Pioneer receiver with USB port that plugs right into my iPod which clips into a holder on the dash. The receiver actually doesn't look too out of place in such an old car.

| Neat job there 1970V4. I like it
How did you design the fixings for the radio such that the front face lines up with the cut-out in the glove box lid ?
I would prefer this arrangement as I already have a cut-out in my lid but there is just fresh air and the glove box insert behind the hole.
Looks like I would have to cut out half of the insert to gain access to decent fixings. Any pictures of the details inside your glovebox please ? Cheers | |

Thanks! I used a 95/96 metal radio bracket that I had in my spares. This is a factory accessory that was used on mid-'70s and earlier LHD cars that had the cutout in the glovebox. These were obviously intended for the old two-knob style radios so I had to use a Dremel tool and cut-off wheel to cut it out enough to be able to fit a modern DIN-sized radio. These radio brackets are not uncommon on 95/96s, at least in the U.S., so I didn't feel bad about modifying one in such a manner.
As far as the glovebox itself, cars fitted with the radio bracket had a smaller half-size cardboard insert in place of the larger full-size one. Again, I had one of these in my spares collection, so I used it in place of the full-size one my car already had. You could still probably still put a radio in and keep your full-size glovebox, it just wouldn't be as clean of an installation.
Here's a photo of mine with the glovebox door open:
