Bit of a story. In the early 90s the car below used to pass me each morning when I was standing at the bus stop waiting to go to work. It turns out it was owned by a guy who lived around the corner from where I live now and who was a year or two below me at school. Always thought it was a fantastic looking and sounding car and hoped that one day I would own a 96 at one time, only took 20 odd years. It turns out that the owner had a mate who also had a 96, a late model souvenier. The pair of them used to smoke around together in the 96s looking like two cool dudes. I was a tad jealous as had an. MG Metro at the time. Next I saw the car was in Popular Classics for sale. I was riding time trials at the time and had just bought a new time trial bike so had no readies and nowhere to keep such a unique car. Next I saw it was in the Circuit of Ireland Retrospective where the photograph was taken. This is the first test at Ballygalley. Think it was about 1993. It the turned up a few years later in the actual Circuit running with a full cage etc. I've a photo somewhere. Anyhow often wondered if the car is still about or if anyone on here knows anything about it. Something going through my head it had been owned by one of the Boyds but that may be wrong. Hope you all like it.user/peterhwilson/media/imagejpg1_zps9fbef2be.jpg.html][/URL]

AAAH !!!
Well there was a reason it sounded so nice.. as it had a 1815cc group 2 rally engine with twin45s on crossover manifold and single/dual port rally exhaust. Regn No FIA 3822. When I heard about it from AlexW back in the 90's it was in Ireland hence the reg no.
I have some photocopies of photos that were sent to Alex by the owner. Trying to find them.

Yes I remember the ad in Practical Classics back in the 90's ,I still have the magazine somewhere. This car has a very interesting history and as John says it was a full group 2 spec. I only have photocopies of the photos of the car when it was for sale as I had to return the originals to the owner. I wish I had bought it back then , I think it was about £3500. The owner did mention that it was owned originally by Derek Boyd, the brother of Adrian Boyd. I have another picture of it on a forest rally in GB back in the early 80's. I'd love to know what happened to it.

Very good thanks for the info. That explains why it sounded so dam hot. It was being used as everyday transport at the time. I'm glad i was right about the Boyds. They had some great cars over the years. Last i saw Derek competing it was in a sprint with a RX7 engined Talbot Sunbeam and that must be about 20 years ago. Used to go to the Rallycross at their quarry in the 70s and 80s. Remember seeing Will Gollop with his rallycross 99 there. I think the bloke who owned it was called Stringer. Don't know if he ever rallied it. Don't think it had a cage at that time. I have another photo of it in stage trim. Will try and find it and post it.

Right I found the other photo. The car is now in full stage trim. This is the first stage of the Circuit of Ireland in Wallace Park Bangor. Don't know what year but think it must be late 90s.

I'm not sure. I think the rules were quite loose for historics at that time. I think there was a V4 Capri running that year as well. No photographs of it unfortunately.

Unfortunately it's not my car so don't know. Could be Minilites. Hopefully some of the rally boys will know.

Just found a site called. Leashe Photography which has photographs of the car above in Derek Boyd's hands in the Ulster Rally of 1976. So it proves that the car was used for stage rallying.

Thanks for the link. I think the yellow wheels on the car are incredibly rare minilights, only ever seen one other set and that was in a picture in a book. Would be great to locate this car again. Strange how the owner hasn't made him or herself known to the forum.

I must have a looksee and see if i can did anything up. Wouldn't be hopeful as the first picture was taken ar least 20 years ago and the last one 17 or 18 years ago. Would definitely be good yo know if its still kicking about. It used to sound brilliant. Wish I had bought it when I had the chance. Bit like the MkII Cooper and the Series 2 Landie I had the chance to buy at relatively inexpensive amounts and passed up!
