When I was in the army, (REME) all the new brake parts were covered in a preservative grease. A petrol wash followed by a blast of heat from a blow torch seemed to sort it out.We did have the odd tank ploughing into a house after brake failure, so maybe not such a good idea.

Sticker came from Anders Jensen (Rolfs brother) I bought several but they have all gone..I need to order more as I want to do another box for Vernon.
All I could find locally was a bag of coarse grit..i was looking for a fine grit but will give Silica a go.
I was looking at different chemicals to coat the screws but i may experiment with a method we used in metalwork at school.. heating them until they are cherry red and then drop them into oil...the adjustable spanner I made didnt rust for years..and that rolled around my car boot for several years before it vanished.
I'm happy to listen to other ideas on protecting the screws as the method i mentions turns the steel black.
The foam seal between the heater box and the body has lost it's depth and hardened in a few places so i'm going to make another..a local supplier has this close cell foam on a roll but it's Sunday and i can't get to them until later in the week.
The snow is back so i'm planning a drive today.

Cheers Chris..i have some already but i wanted to cut it from a single sheet like the original.
That's some fan..what's it off? I stuck the nozzle of a Henry hoover in and that keeps it clear. Biggest issue is the lighting..the light is at the back of the unit so you get brilliant light on the back of the item you are cleaning and a shadow on the front...i'm going to add a baulk head light on the front of the unit.

Nice job on the heater box,I wish I hadn't painted mine Black now.
Heating and quenching in oil gives a good protective finish however if you do not want to make the screw brittle then heat to blue and quench, I have things I made 43 years ago as a apprentice which are still blue.

What oil should I use..engine oil or a lighter oil like 3in1?
So not too much heat..just enough before they start to glow?

The correct oil is whale oil, engine oil is good.

Don't mess about just get new screws. Direct replacement stainless are cheap even if you have to search a bit for the identical cross head pattern.

Did anyone spot the difference?

The drum on the left has a groove in the outer bearing bore..the one on the right doesn't..the one on the right has a hole on the outer edge.the one on the left doesn't..without checking I think one is for a 96 and one for a 95. DOH!

The only difference between 96 and 95 drums is (as far as I know) the stamped in '95' in the latter. And of course the bearings are different, but those are interchangeable. I'd rather think they're of different years. The inspection hole on the right one is pretty useful by the way.

Before the heater box comes off I have a few small jobs to do..

..one issue that has been here since day one..bubbling in one area you really don't want to rot through...

It didn't take much to scrape the crusty bits off and sand it down..caught just in time as some areas had started to get deep...i cleaned everything back to fresh metal and coated it in rust converter..

After cleaning the drain holes and blowing all of the dead leaves and flies out of the fresh air intake I strapped a small brush to a length of strong wire and brushed rust converter along the lower edge of the inside..hopefully this will make it's way into any breaks in-between the 2 panels..later i'm also going to spray clear wax oil in there before the plastic box goes back on..
Tomorrow evening..paint.
