| John your bang might be from not having a flame guard in your breather pipe, causing a back fire in the carb to ignite the venting gases in the engine. | |

| Phew it's hot..and the cars needle keeps rising dispite the Kenlow so it's time for another radiator..it will be another 2nd hand item but as i have about 5 i'm sure one of them must be in good shape. To help with under bonnet heat i have wrapped the top ends of the Jettex with some of www.heatshieldproducts.com exhaust wrap and after a good drive on a hot day there was a very notisable difference and the hot start issues seem to have dissapeared. My old 2 stroke had side vents in the bonnet (an optional extra for hot climate cars), i wonder why SAAB never fitted a similar vent to the V4's? The car has developed a stutter on deseleration..if i take my foot off the throttle when slowing down it will hiccup and if i plant my foot again it does the same...this only happens at slow speed, I'm guessing there is a fuel delivery problem with the carb so i will check the float and check for play in the ICH. | |

| A bit off the wall, but weigh your 5 rads and use the lightest, on the basis that it will have the least crud in it. Or, seal the bottom outlets and see which one takes the most water. A bonus if the lightest and the one with the highest capacity is the same. Or, find the point of balance with the rad laid flat. Crud in the bottom will put the balance point downwards. 3 out of 3 and you could be on a winner.

| Great idea Derek. Chris..the badge will be posted this week. What i really want is a proper inlet manifold for the twin Weber..but if the 34 is the "27" model i will accept your deal as it can be fitted to the beige beast when i finally get around to sorting it. | |

You can pressure test rads for leaks by connecting the inlet and outlet with a piece of bicycle inner tube, filling the rad with water and slowly applying pressure with a bicycle pump through the tube's valve. Some bicycle pumps even have a pressure gauge, I'm not sure how much pressure a rad should be able to take though... Off course the expansion bottle has a pressure relief valve, when you pump hard enough you can also test whether this works properly (if the tube doesn't explode).

| I could well be wrong, but I do not think you will be able to apply much pressure at All using this method, when the tubr is not contained by a tyre it will tend to expand then pop, think I read 8psi is where the standard rad cap opens up. | |

| I agree with you that you won't be able to apply much pressure, but this method is definitely sufficient to discover leaks in old rads. 8psi is not that much by the way. Making the tube as short as possible also helps I would think. My suggestion to pump until the relief valve opens was actually meant as a joke, hence the

| New radiator being made as i write. I had these floating around for 10+ years and thought it was time to fit them to something..the yellow reflectors look great against the green. Trouble is that one of the bulbs has blown..i looked world-wide and found a bulb just up the road from me..but it's £36 . The bulb is unusual ..a Mazda 450..i may look at trying to fit a different bulb set up...but i do like the look of these Raydot lamps. [/url] | Edited by - john-saab on 17 Aug 2010 11:11:35 | |
