My block , crank, pistons etc have gone to the machine shop for boring to the correct size. I'm Using a 1.7 crank and have Mahle pinto Pistons which have floating pins with no circlips to prevent lateral movement. The engineer, a very experienced and respected guy, picked up on this straight away and is talking about machining up buttons to fit the piston gudgeon holes to prevent lateral movement. We did this on my 99 rally car and I didn't think about it at the time, but when I checked the old Pistons and rods, (1.7) I notice they just float and the pin is held solid by the con rod.
Anyone with experience of building a rally engine any opinions on the use of buttons at the end of the gudgeons?

Teflon buttons? Sounds as if these pistons and pins are designed to be used with the pins "fixed" in the rods. With no circlips they will gouge into the cylinder walls if they come adrift, hence the buttons as back-up. I see that there are 3 different systems used here and with some variations too.
