| When i bought Veronica the first issue i needed to sort was the noisy gearbox..Jarrod the guy i swapped the car with had mentioned it and it was loud..more like a pre-war gearbox/driveshaft whine..louder as you went faster then at about 65 it almost went quiet. I replaced the gearbox and to my horror it didn't change at all. My next thought was bearings or CV joints..i cleaned both sides and re packed with grease..it made no difference so today i replaced both sides with known good 2nd hand units with good bearings and cv joints. Perfectly quiet now so what was it..the CV joints had no play at all..the outer bearings were good..the inner drive shaft bearings on the drivers side were in good condition..as were the ones on the passengers side but when i cleaned the inner drive shaft end on the passengers side i could see that it was worn..the fine lines taht can be seen on a good item were gone and there was a hint of blue metal and ripples of rough steel..almost like the outer coating had worn away. I will post pictures tomorrow but it's a lesson for the future..never assume the worst when the gear box is noisy! |

| I think I may have this problem. Car has started whinning under acceleration in any gear, but once it's at a level speed and not under strain the noise stops. how big a job is changing a cv joint and how long can I hold off before it will need doing. | |

| I'm beginning to wonder if some of the odd noises I get from the front of my car may be down to this too!
How much of a job is it to get the drive-shafts out, John?

| Removing the drive shaft is reasonably simple..if you remove it with the wheel hub...it goes something like..jack up car, remove wheel..remove caliper (no need to undo the pipe..just hang the caliper out of the way in the wheel arch) pop the track rod end out of it's arm..undo top and bottom swivel mounts..undo inner drive shaft boot (large jubilee clip)..withdraw driveshaft..2 things to remember when withdrawing the shaft..it's reasonably heavy with the hub attached and make sure that when you remove the shaft that the 2 cups at the inner end of the drive shaft don't drop out as they are full of needle rollers and if you lose one you are in trouble. When the shaft is out find somewhere safe (a large sheet underneath) and gently take the inner driveshaft cups off..clean up the driveshaft end and if it's in good condition you should see shallow, thin lines radiating out on the bearing carrier (I will try and get pics later)..if they are worn smooth then chances are your needle bearings are also worn down. When re-assmbling make sure you have a full set of bearings..a good dollop of grease will hold them in place and when replacing the cups ensure that none of the bearings falls into the bottom as that will destroy all of your hard work in no time. I have found this problem on 2 cars now so it's not a one off issue! | |

| Favourite is that someone lost a roller or two out of the cup and just put it back together. | |

| I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that an alternative to replacing the driveshafts was to swap them around! This has them rotating in the opposite direction, and therefore the load bearing face on the "T" is on the opposite - and hopefully unworn - side!
Does anyone else recall this, or has anyone tried it?

| Yes, you can pull the inner shafts out of the differential and swap L/R around. That will present unworn surfaces to the T-bearings of the middle shafts, but it does not reduce total play.

| I was actually thinking about swapping the drive shafts themselves, rather than the inners. But I take your point!

| Just realised I put cv joint instead of drive shaft. Which drive shaft is likely to go first, passenger side or driver, or is it just luck of the draw? | |

Saab 95/96 quiz question; how many needle rollers per cup?
