| Its a small world as far as the saab v4 are concerned!
Thats great info - the mechanics name on the sheets is a Jim Downie
I would be much obliged if you could find out if the bearings were changed - I can find no mention of in history only timing gears and timing case with fan pump and the oil pump as you said
cheers | |

| Just taken car for MOT - to give me an idea of what work would be required - I know the garage well and friendly MOT guy let me change a few light bulbs - and she passed straight away!
If the car has not had its balance shaft bearings replaced Any idea of costs for these? and approx time to change? In June car will be doing 3000+ miles in a week - so makes sense to have this done While the engine is out any other parts that i should be looking at replacing?
thanks again | |

| Will try and speak to Martin tomorrow, in any case I would not worry, I am sure Western would have done all necessary work to make engine good. | |

| Many thanks for that - the clutch and gearbox are excellent so was the real reason car was bought and nice to know the rear shocks were renewed. Have to see what the current oil/breathing problems bring otherwise ill be looking at engine out and overhaul or replacement engine? - current mileage is at 106,000 so i guess balance shaft and camshaft bearings would be beneficial. Plan to is get the car fit enough to complete the rally 3000+ miles then do a full restore - was hoping to spend as little money as possible getting the car fit as its a charity rally and as im involved with the RNLI want to raise as much as possible - now shes MOTd its only really the engine that concerns me - Our lifeboat mechanics will help and offer me advice so i see how its goes | |

| If ventilation system is correct it sounds like piston/bore issues this will be most likely be quite expensive to sort out, try flushing the engine and putting some miles on car with fresh oil and see how bad it actually is, unless engine seems terminally unwell I would not worry too much, there are plenty of other things that could well give up but the v4 engine is capable of quite a bit of abuse. | |

| You could try some 20/50 oil, which is what I would use in an old engine that has done some serious miles. Dont use synthetic 40w oils in a well used engine. In fact dont run synthetic oils without a ZDDP additive in old engines. | |

| This has been an interesting thread..and sorry if i'm hijacking it a little here but it is related to scallyrally's original post. I have had similar issues since fitting the Weber on my car so having read the comments on engine ventilation i checked my car..if i take the oil filler cap off when the car is cold and running the engine stalls. If i remove the pipe that goes from the other rocker (oil cap back on)to the air filter the car runs almost perfect when up to temperature and re-starting is very easy..so is it the valve in the base plate or something else..i think i have the vent system correct. | |

| That's a good point - the Fomoco was designed to deal with the oil ventilation, but was the Weber?
I've got a vented oil cap (no pipe from the rocker cover) and it runs fine. Be interesting to hear if others with a Weber have the breather going into their air filter!? | |

| When I had my original 96 back in the early 70s, it started stalling and refusing to start. Slackening off the air filter cured the problem. The diagnosis by the local dealers was a blocked breather valve. They cleaned it out, and running returned to normal.
This was on the original FoMoCo carb, before I fitted a Weber. The car was a 69 model - no servo, but it did have a breather pipe going from the rocker cover to the air filter.
Hope this gives you a clue!

| I appreciate everyones responses to my problems so feel free to hijack away! its always good to learn and view different perspectives - and I will be looking in all directions mentioned I will use a good 20/50 oil - just waiting for rocker gaskets and the snow to stop - my drives on a slight slope and a pain to work on in the ice and snow!

| Well took off both lever arms today beacuse there was a clunk from the rear - and for units that were apparently rebuilt they seemed in poor condition so have swapped for spare ones i had and clunkin has gone away - the rubbers on the old 'rebuilt ones were in poor condition' Are these rubbers available anywhere?
