I took an engine from a scrap car and when it was in the original car with a standard exhaust it sounded fine.
Now fitted into Veronica with a Jetex attached it is very clattery..i cant hear exactly where the noise is coming from...i can't figure out if it's top or bottom end..i checked the valves clearences and they were fine but there is a very small amount of play in the rocker arms.
I had a stethoscope all over the engine but can't pin point the chatter..it's loud.
Any suggestions on how to check for bottom end wear without taking the engine out? Any other ideas?

Oil pressure?

In my experience, these engines always tended to be a bit clattery anyway - even when they were new! However, if this is a sudden change, it needs investigation.

If it were the bottom end, I suspect it would be a heavier "knock". Its unlikely anything internal to the engine has got disturbed during the switch, but how about the clutch area? Could something have come adrift / not mated properly in there?

Is it a once-per-rev clatter, or more frequent?

The rockers can sound a little clattery, you could check valve clearances. Have you checked for any small exhaust leaks? My rally car sounded clattery at the end of the last rally and from experience I knew it would be a leak on one of the primary pipes. There was only a slight leak, you could hardly feel it, which made a dah, dah, dah sound (or was it a more tick, tick, tick). I just loosend all the joints, gave them a giggle and re-tightend, job done. The only other thing could be timming gears, so loosen the fan belt and see if there is any play.

I will check the exhaust today..i had the front cover off before it went back in the car so that i could check the timing gear..it was fine and i took the balance shaft gear off to inspect the end bearing..it looked new and the cap at the back looked like it had been recently fitted..the sealent around it looked almost fresh so i didn't drift the shaft out to check the bearings.
As for the sound..think rocker arm with loads of clearence....but i checked the clearence twice and it's as near to perfect as i can get...tap tap tap
Hoping it's the exhaust as i want to use it at the weekend for Swedish day.

Sounds a bit like a problem I had last year, it wouldn't rattle all the time, and usually under acceleration, couldn't always tell from where it was coming from. Turned out to be ressonance from the stainless steel exhaust. The fixing just had to be tweaked.

Not the exhaust..i'm on plan 2 now..need balance shaft bearings URGENT so i can re-build the engine i took out...the rear bearing had slipped forward and was hanging on by 5mm..if i can get new bearings today/tomorrow i can do the shaft and replace the original engine.

I'm back to plan 1. As i have a free day and no bearings i thought i would try the engine with the valve covers off..plenty of oil reaching the rockers but i noticed that there was a lot of side movement in one bank of rockers..leaning on one of the rocker arms with a wooden hammer handle almost eliminated the noise. I then noticed that the spring clip on the end of the shaft wasn't in the correct position..i took the shaft out and found that the rocker that is against the spring is worn and there is a deep droove in the shaft. I have found the best shaft I have from my spares and cleaned everything up..it's all fitted but i still need to check the clearences...i'm off out for a while but will have a go later..i'm hoping this is the problem..fingers crossed!

Glad you found the problem. I didn't think it would be the bottom end!

I'm hoping to get down to Swedish day, but it will be touch and go! I've polished the car up ready, but even if I do get there, it won't be by opening time!

Hope to see you there, if luck smiles on me!

BTW, did you get my message about Jim (owner of Frankenstein's Monster)?
