The fuel gauge on my 'New' 1977 V$ is stuck at Full all the time...
This is dodgy, as I have run out of petrol twice in the last week, and not to mention that when I put petrol in... most of it goes on the ground thanks to a leak in the pipe somewhere (to be investigated)

Does anyone have a tip on how to 'Free' the gauge to get it to read correctly?

Thanks from a Newbie!!!

Check the connections on the sender unit - on top of the fuel tank. I think a permanent 'full' reading means the earth is disconnected or loose.

does it only do it when the ignition is on or is it stuck there all the time, even if you had no battery attached? If its not an electrical fault, the gauge will come out if you release the clamp from behind. You could then take the front off and carefully see if the needle is stuck.

Only when the ignition is switched on...the needle LEAPS to the top!

Yes - that sounds like a missing earth, probably at the sender end. But if the temp guage is also giving funny readings, check the instrument earth behind the dash. Its usually just above your right knee in a RHD car, and is often the same screw that holds the flasher unit in place.
