I've been having a problem with the 95 driver side door lock, which has me baffled!

For once, the problem isn't the key/barrel! This works perfectly. However, the rotating barrel isn't rotating the corresponding locking mechanism!

Between the two parts of the lock is a small disk (about 1/4" diameter) with a raised edge along the diameter on each side. This appears to be a device for translating the rotation of the offset barrel to the non-offset locking mechanism. I'm guessing that its dropping out of engagement on one side or the other. But why?

The bits should be held together by the pressure of the spring that pushes the button out.

Is the disk worn? does anyone have either spare or an explanation of what else might be happening?

Thanks to this, I actually managed to lock myself out of the car yesterday, with the keys in the ignition and the engine running! My embarrassment was only partly offset when a mate turned up a few minutes later and manage to jiggle the passenger door lock and get me back inside........!!!

It is likely that the inner barrel slot which the small disk bar locates in has worn so that it slips. There is little that can be done, other than strip and check. I have done this to two locks and they still slip. What we need is a supply of inner barrels that can have the springs and plungers transferred into to restore the lock operation.

Yes, Woody, that looks like the problem. I did dismantle it all, and when I re-assembled it, it did work for a couple of days before failing again. I wonder if I can file the slot a bit wider, and then build it up again with some new metal bonded in with JB Weld - or even real weld?

I'll have a go on my next day off......

The inner barrel I believe is alloy. Difficult to build up weld without blocking the key slot.

I've had a go at the lock again today, and its now working - but for how long? The problem is that the fault isn't quite as obvious as Woody's pix suggest....

This is what the lock looked like when I stripped it:

As you can see, its worn at the edges, but the groove is also distinctly V shaped, though this isn't obvious from the pictures.

I tickled it with a file to get the edges more vertical, hoping this would stop it pushing the intermediate thingy up and out under load. I re-assembled it, and it was working fine - no sign of disengaging.

But, the end driver didn't seem to be pressing hard enough against the actual lock itself to hold everything in place. The protruding driver was plenty long enough to engage with the actual lock, so I made a washer up to go between the barrel driver, and the cylinder which actually does the locking. I had to file some slots in the washer to clear the "peg" of the driver:

The idea is to try and increase the pressure - or rather, remove the slop - between the various elements that make up the "sandwich" on the end of the key barrel.

Its all back in the car now ,and working. The test will be if its still working in a couple of weeks time.....!

You might have something there. I shall have to try it also.

Well, its nearly two weeks since I re-fitted the lock, and its still working fine! Hopefully, I've cured the problem!

If it fails again, I'll let everyone know, but in he meantime, this looks like a worthwhile "fix"!
