I recently discovered the cause of my significant suspension clunk - the right rear shock absorber has busted through the top of the tower and is banging around (a bad repair weld broke). The left looks ready to go soon as well.

What is the 'proper' repair and are parts available?

I recently did the left hand side on mine by welding in a section from a donor car: http://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?topic_id=31068 The other side was bodged years ago using 2mm or so sheet.

Thanks - I'm not having much luck finding a donor car or parts. It is a shame that this failed as it is just the immediate area around the top of the shock, the rest of the tower is in fine shape.

I've seen large washers used for this repair. As said, I've knocked up the other side from sheet, solid enough but doesn't look pretty.

Does the Swedish Saab Club do this panel?

Here's the bodywork section of the Club Shop...

I've been in touch with a few local people and it looks like I can cut out the spot and weld in a patch. Then weld in an 'L' piece over it.

As long as you use nice thick steel, I don't see a problem with that.

What thickness would you consider adequate?

ETA - I was recommended 16ga steel from another source.

Not sure about US steel thicknesses. we use mm here! I gather that's about 1.6mm. I'd use the thickest you can work with. It's over 20 years since I did that job on a 96. I probably used 2mm.
