| Thanks Woody, I'm afraid you and Melle have lost me on jetting, primary spindles etc so will have to look into it at a later date. I will check for names properly on the adaptor block. Yes vent missing not good, (if anyone has a replacement, nor bothered about colour or badge I am going to Swedish Day and SOC National) does not seem to have done any harm so far but I need to take the board off the petrol tank yet!
I cannot turn the engine over by pulling on the fan belt, so she maybe pretty seized! I,m not bothered by this at the moment, it,s a long way off being back on the road and I can always pick up another engine or ask John to have a look at this one. I need to sort the rust first and do any welding (or rather my mate) once I have had a proper poke around, the windscreen surround is going to be tricky, it looks like the rot has gone into the wiper spindle. The underside looks OK still, inner wings, bottoms of turrets etc, who ever did the welding did a good job. I have replacement wings pretty much sorted where needed But I don,t want to strip her down just yet as I must finish my other one which will take until next spring possibly as funds slowly dribble into it and when GMac has time next year to have a go on it.
Psychologically it would be better for me to cover her over for a year and start on her fresh, rather than have bits of her all over the place. I would really like to have a go at spraying her however which may push things on a bit this year. I would use the safer paint and it won,t be pretty but will have a tidy enough finish for a fun hack and it will be the cheapest way of doing it more importantly. This one is going to be done on a seriously low budget!

Even the healthiest engine will give you a hard time getting it through the compression if you try turning it like this. Best pull the plugs, put it in third gear and push the car. Alternatively you can use a 17mm spanner on the balance shaft pulley bolt and turn it clockwise; however, this might put a more strain on the balance shaft gear than you want.

| Good to hear Melle, she is wrapped up under a cover now so will have a go at a later date. Once I have finished cleaning a Defender I am going to carry on with the other 96 this afternoon
It,s going to be handy have Dotty as a reference for putting the other one back together.

| That's a very nice car indeed, also up close, and it's being used in anger as well which is nice for a purpose built car. Iirc Jeroen is a member on here, forgot his user name.

Thanks Gorslands, is your colour code the same as mine R2b, is that Torreador red anyone. I cannot find my book and it doesn,t say colour names in the 1972 brochures.
I'm sure Toreador red is R2. My 1971 car's colour code is also R2B. Like you I can't find an exact match of that code, but the previous owner said it was Californian Burgundy Red, and that name appears as RB2 on some literature I've found online - it's probably a missprint.

| Toreador Red is R2B. That is the colour of works rally cars up to 1972.
I had the Troll painted in R2 and there is a subtle difference.

| Interesting, this was also discussed at length about a 95 that ended up in Scotland, forgotten who bought it now but I am sure he is a member on here. Most said Torreador red by looking at pictures BUT it was burgundy!
Sod it, I can,t leave her alone, I am going to take the covers off and take out the rear cards and petrol tank cover to see what she looks like down there.

| First proper look this evening. Phew, lucky, thought this was going to be much worse but it goes back under to better metal... Deepest bit is outside and seems to run up not the other way around. Wiper spimdle similar. Usually it just gets worse... a lot worse.
No welding at the rear underneath at all, it,s all sound, rear jacking points never been welded  The welding has been done in the front foot well and at the corners of the front apron. The turrets etc all good. Underneath the seams are good, just beginning to blow in one area on the nearside door sill. God I am lucky and soooo pleased. I did wonder what I had landed myself with but this all seems to be achievable on a small budget. The only other area of rust is behind the heater triangular connecting piece which is the same as on my other one. Water has been getting through the bulkhead from the interior trim grommets that have been removed and possible the previously mentioned rust area. I don,t know how bad it is yet but it,s not a major problem, I could manage to sort that myself.
Very odd this motor, at some point somebody has had it all stripped out and protected and painted stuff like the petrol tank right down to the washers on the board above the tank  then it is left half way through the door bottoms being done and the front wing being sorted! Very lucky, bar any problems mechanically which I am not worried about as that can be sorted she is definitely worth investing some cash, time and effort into.

Mine is Torreader Red then, rally colour . Thanks for that Woody, when they fade they look more burgundy. You can see the original red under the windscreen surround and the interior of course.
R2 Torreader red (mine is R2b! Odd) Rb2 burgundy

| Whilst volunteering on the NEC SAAB stand yesterday with these guys an old family friend popped up saying he sold the car pictured to the present owner and while looking at pictures of mine noticed that the registration numbers are consecutive  There are two Dotty's now being restored. DOT 722k & DOT 723K :D
