| I should flush and renew before cold spell comes .The existing colour is a rusty brown !! I recently read that older cars really should only have the blue type antifreeze as the reds and oranges and green can damage seals and pipes . What does everyone use it used to be an easy choice as you could only get Bluecol !! Whilst asking what does everyone use for clutch/ brake fluid on old rubbers and seals? Thanks John |

| Hi John, I dont think that the colour of antifreeze is important. I saw in market the same product ( chemicaly) once in blue and other time in red. Rusty brown colour is due to rust from contact with iron parts (motor block). Anyhow antifreeze has to be changed in intervals (2 to 3 years) so in this period the rust has no influence to its function. I used red and blue one in much older car and didn't have any problem. Regarding break and clutch fluid, the standard products are on glycol basis, they dont hurt rubber parts, but are aggressive to metals, brake linings and paint. Disadvantage is also their hygroscopic character (absorbing water from air moisture) which drasticaly reduces their quality. Therefore I prefer to use "silicon based" hydraulic liquid, which is neither aggressive nor hygroscopic. | |

| Red antifreeze is long life and the additives used mean it should not be used in cars with a rusty cooling system. Both red and blue are ethylene glycol based but have different additives.
Stick to the blue stuff and change it every 2 years.
Sounds like your system would benefit from a good flush as well.

| I usually put a 1/3 mix of antifreeze to the coolant capacity. | |
