| Good evening All,
Can anyone advise the spanner size for the front brake calliper fixing bolts please.
They are seized solid and I do not want to risk rounding the heads off.
Any thoughts on removal ?
Also, does anyone know the socket size for the front hub castellated nut ?
I removed the hub nut with a large shifter but I will have to torque it up on re-assembly.
Cheers

5/8"AF or 16mm if you must.

Swearing usually helps, otherwise try heat and impact.

From memory: 34 or 36mm is close, but also this one is imperial. Can check tomorrow if that helps.

| Hi Melle, Thanks for your reply.
16mm felt a bit loose. I must have a 5/8th AF socket, I'll try that tomorrow.
32 mm is the largest socket that I have but it is just too small . . . . .If you can confirm the imperial size, that would be very useful.
I don't have any impact tools sadly but, given the state of the nuts/ bolts on the suspension and brake components, I may have to review this situation.
Thanks Jim

I believe the castle nut is 1 5/16" imperial size

No problem Jim. I ended up buying a whole 3/4" drive socket set just to get that one socket! And then I had to buy 3/4" to 1/2" drive adapter so that I could use my impact on it. Kind of a pain in the butt.

| Jim Body fixings are always Imperial and Engine fixings are Metric. I remember buying a couple of 1/2" sockets for my 96 a few years ago (inc. hub nuts); they were sold individually on eBay - can't now remember the seller, but good service. Good to know work is progressing ! Derek
Edit - PS Have just had a quick look, the seller was Midlands Tool Supplies (mids-tools).

Looks like The blowtorch will be required !
Thanks for the information.
Research later, out to the garage now.

Sounds like progress is being made. Methinks it's time for me to swan up to Aiberdeen for a visit.

| Hi Andy.
Visit any time you wish. Always good to see you and your lovely car.
I am still working part time ( Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday) but I am speaking to the Escape Committee.
Just stopped for coffee . Three of the bolts were a nightmare and the fourth is impossible. . . . . . . . Why is the last one always the worst !
Often best to soak in release oil and re-group.
Cheers

| Success !
All Caliper bolts are now off Heh Heh !
Heat, release oil, IRWIN Bolt Extractor ( stamped 3/8, 16mm), 800mm lever ( Exhaust Pipe) and numerous permutations of ratchets sorted things out.
Not much room to move in there and SAAB kindly placed the bleed nipples just where the socket wants to go. I suppose this is not a problem if the caliper is being completely removed but I just wanted to loosen them off at this stage as I will be tackling the hydraulics later.
I bought new calipers from Brakes International in Rochdale for my 99 so I will probably go back to them for new Calipers for my 96.
Another good day at the office.
Thanks to all for input, comments and encouragement.
Cheers

| Well done! You'll have a hard time finding new calipers for a 96 I'm afraid...

| Hi Melle,
I'll be calling Brakes International tomorrow to see what they can do.
When I said "New" I meant " Refurbished", apologies.
They took back all four of my old 99 Calipers and gave me a set of shiny, functioning one's.
Hopefully they can do something with my 96ers because they are seized solid. They could be the 49 year old originals.
I have never seen Wedge shaped pads with a pivot arrangement before, very interesting.
Cheers

| 'Swinging' calipers - very '60s ! I got the refurb calipers for my 96 from Brakes International about 10 years ago (just after Highgate closed down) - good quality. Let us know if they still do them ! Derek

| Good to see you got them off. Caliper bolts as Melle says are 5/8" Hex Head with thread of 7/16"NC14. Boltshank length is 15/16" with thread length of 9/16". I had trouble getting replacements even in 1978/9 and my dealer sorted some off the Saab 99 which had to be shortened.
Hub nut as already mentioned is 1 5/16". The socket will be 3/4" drive, and highly recommend a 3/4" T-bar to aid undoing. I took a nut to my local tool stockist and the socket he supplied is marked Bedford Chrome Van SKW24 3/4W & 7/8BS. Have been using it for 45years now. | Hi Woody,
I can take a picture of the shifter tomorrow but I will have to Email it to someone as I cannot post images since the Photobucket farce. I can also show you my 800mm breaker bar ! !
Thanks for the information.
Cheers
