 Throttle Linkage Spring on a 1968 96

Hello all! Thank you for allowing me to join your group. I learned how to drive a standard in 1973 in a 1969 96 and have loved them since. I recently purchased a 1968 96. Southern car very solid. Working on sorting the various issues in order to get it running. Need some help. Can anyone tell me where the throttle linkage spring attaches.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
In the UK RHD models have the battery tray nearby and the shortish spring is clipped into a hole in the side of the tray. USA and LHD models don't have that on the LHS of the engine bay, but had a different spring according to the parts book, which I suspect was longer to allow it to go down to the transmission side stay and clip there.
There are some forum members, with LHD cars, whom I am sure will contribute later.

LHD cars don't have the transmission steady (I still wonder why), the spring hooks onto a dedicated plate on the steering rack. They easily break and are often missing, I've made a few replacements in stainless. Can take a pic tomorrow if that helps.

Hi PatV4,

This image shows the bottom end of the Throttle Return Spring which hooks under the plastic cover at the Heater valve. If you feel underneath this housing, you will feel a cut out to accept the bottom end of the spring. The spring is approx 150mm long.

This picture was taken from my 1968 Left hand drive V4.

The LHD gear change system is very simple when compared to the RHD one. RHD technically and mechanically not very good hence the gear change alignment problems. Can't say I've read any posts from LHD owners with this problem. LHD seems to be able to tolerate a bit of gearbox variation hence no adjustable stay.

My car (1968) has the adjustable transmission steady fitted.
I will post a picture when i can.

James, I just checked the parts book, never noticed the early V4s used a different throttle control rod and return spring design. The book doesn't show what the different springs attach to, this is what's on my car:





I've copied this a decade or so ago from another car, assuming it was how Saab originally did it.

Could the transmission steady be retrofitted? I've never seen one on a LHD V4, but I'm sure they would benefit from it. I've had a few left hookers and although the linkage set-up is simpler than on RHD cars, I wish what Derek said was true... I have a steady ready to be fitted on my 96.

Thank you all very much. It seems that mine may hook under the heater valve. I will check that out. For the time being I have a spring attached down by the clutch slave cylinder. Finally got mine running and have been driving it all weekend. I can now start working on cosmetics. I am also having an issue with my wipers. I know the motor is good but only have low speed, and no power to the washer pump. Where is the wiper relay located? Thank you all again for your help.

There is no separate wiper relay. Most probably the issue is not in the motor, but in the spindles being banged up, a common issue.

Oh wait, your car is a '68 so you have the older style motor, not sure if they have a separate relay. Still, check the spindles first.

Your picture shows two brackets on the steering housing, one you made and one that looks original that has the speedo cable attached to it.

My 96s only have one bracket, for the spring

When I got the car it had one intact bracket and the remains of another one; I replaced the latter with the newly made stainless bracket. I also made a replacement for another car I had at the time (can't remember if that one originally had one or two brackets) and I made two for someone else's 96.
