Noise from a driveshaft. When investigating garage tells me the rear gearbox mount has come loose and the gearbox is sitting on the floorpan. Any idea how this could happen and what's involved to repair?

Now I'm told the gearbox rear rubber mount has perished and it's an engine out job. Haven't seen it myself. The thing is, it's been driving fine; the only reason it's in the garage is because of a noise from the wheel bearing/driveshaft.

Can anyone tell me does the rear mount 'perish'? Is it an engine out job? Bit difficult as I haven't actually seen it.

Hi Owen,
It's only taken an hour, but I finally tracked this down (see link) after doing an image search for 'V4 gearbox mount' and I found the image I posted on this forum. It looks like the thread has been archived, which is why I couldn't find it earlier.

Scroll down to 20 Oct and there is a pic of the gearbox mount in my car - the central 'collar' had split!
Not sure how much this helps, but it least it shows you what they look like...

Also, I wonder if anyone has one of these guides handy...

Thanks Simon,
Does anyone know where I get a replacement rear gearbox mount?
Anyone know of a bodge that might work? Jacking it up and inserting rubber between floorpan and box? Loosening engine, moving it forward and replacing mount without removing engine?

Anyone know of anyone close to North London who could do this job?

I think Skandix do these and probably Malbrad too - check out their websites.

As for someone who could do the job - fairly near to North London would be Dawid at Leelac Saab in Stevenage. Although he works on more modern Saab's he knows the V4 very well and may know a workaround that doesn't involve taking out the engine.

His number is 07850 401572

Skandix no longer stock them and the Malbrad one is 162!

Hopefully, someone on here has a used one in good condition. John Wyatt has been selling some V4 parts recently, so he may have one, or you could try Graham at Macdonald Classic Cars/The Saab Shop.

Just checked ebay and the last person to sell one, was 'lumpey' from this forum I think - and it was 36 for all engine/gearbox mounts, which is a lot more reasonable.

Let us know how you get on...

Considering the amount of work entailed to take out the engine and gearbox, there is roughly a 0% chance I would recommend a used mount...!

Nice find! They sell that mount for way less than anyone else I have seen.

mount:
V4 (95,96 V4 1967-1980)
https://svenskasaabklubben.nordicshops.com/product.html/880328?category_id=14

EDIT:
2T (95,96 1965-1968, 2-Takt)
https://svenskasaabklubben.nordicshops.com/product.html/732404?category_id=14
2T (93,95,96 1956-1964)
https://svenskasaabklubben.nordicshops.com/product.html/783880?category_id=14

I've seen that the tower / pin on the gearbox has broke off.
Not usual.

The mount listed on the Swedish club site is a two stroke part, I think there is a difference between the 2 stroke part and the V4 part.
I had this problem when my v4 failed it's MOT on excess play on the rear gearbox mount. I had to remove engine and box just to find that the bolts holding the rear mount had come loose. Annoyingly I later found out that the gearbox mountings are nothing to do with the MOT and I should have queried the tester's authority to fail it.

AlexW:
Right, I have changed.

I guess
-64 and 65-68 same stiffness. (2T)
The divinity is 3 welded nuts of 65-68.
68-80 (V4) is stiffer in the rubber than 2T
Otherwise, like 65-68 (2T)
