| The Jetex on my V4 finally let go (in a BIG way) a few weeks back, about 30 miles from home! The RAC managed a bodge to get me home (very noisily!), but it had been on there for about 7 years, so I can't complain!
I decided to investigate getting a custom stainless steel one made. I wanted something that would restore that wonderful V-engine burble, but not as noisy as the Highgate originally fitted to the car. It wasn't cheap, but I'm well pleased with the result:

Rock on!

| Yes, I spotted him looking as I went up the road! I thought "B****r! Probably the chairman of the noise abatement society!" However, he stopped and spoke to my son, who was wielding the video camera. Turns out he used to be a SAAB mechanic and worked on 2-strokes and V4s back in the day!
Unfortunately, by the time I'd turned round and got back, he'd gone......

| I would be interested in seeing the system fitted as mine is blowing. Looks like you have twin pipes, like it !

| My son and his family came to visit over Christmas, and out little grand-daughter has managed to leave us all with stinking colds! (Children are *killers*!) As soon as I feel up to it, I'll get out and take some pix and post them here. Essentially, it mimics the Highgate twin system, but with smaller pipes and proper silencers at the rear.
A word of warning though: Custom stainless steel work is not cheap! It is guaranteed for life, however!

| HI, It sounds great.
I assume it is twin pipes with a balance cross pipe at about 54"
I need to re-jig the current one on the sonett as it is too noisy at about 3000RPM which is cruise speed. Currently Jetex header and centre resonator splitting into 2 cherry bombs at back. | |

| That sounds and looks great Pete! So much better than the ricer-style Jetex tip.

| Managed to get out and take some pix of the exhaust today. Sorry if some are slightly blurred, I was trying to take them in the garage - not much room and at a funny angle!
First up showing the off-side rear pipe leading to the silencer (the near side is a mirror image):
You can just see the silencer box through the towing eye. Here it is from another angle:
It tucks up inside the well quite neatly!
Here's the front showing the position of the balance pipe:
And here's the other side:
I've never found any calculations as to the exact positioning of a balance pipe. The only reference I could find was that it should be as close to the headers as possible! I've no idea if that's right or not! But as you can see, its fits quite neatly just in front of the front axle line.
It may just be because of the sound, but the car feels slightly livelier than on the Jetex, and I've been able to go about 1/8 of a turn leaner on the idle mixture. To me, that suggest its slightly more efficient. It may be worth trying slightly leaner main jets in the carb now, but I'll leave that until the weather improves a bit - or until I can find a rolling road at a reasonable price!
For the moment, I'm just enjoying it!

| Pete
I had a stainless, custom job built on my 96 as well, though they brought the pipes together in a "Y" formation, rather than a "T". They said it would aid gas flow. Photo below.

| My original 96, back in the late 60s, had a SAH exhaust, which was a two-into-one-back-to-two system. But the nice thing about a twin with a balance pipe is that you get that lovely V-engine "burble".
