| Hello all, I've not been on here for a while, spent more time driving the Saab than fixing it. I now need to pick your brains, I think my brake servo is failing, the pedal goes spongey every so often. I have no loss of fluid and can't detect a vacuum leak, I'll check the NRV for engine oil as suggested in one of the earlier posts.
Does the MGB servo fit/work? or what are the other alternatives?
Thanks Jeff |

| Hi Jeff, I think if a servo fails, the pedal is more likely to become hard to press due to lack of assistance, at least that's my guess. Your sympoms sound like it could be the master cylinder seals leaking. Sometimes fluid leaks past worn seals and then leaks back again when the pedal is lifted. This way you loose no fluid but the pedal can feel different from time to time. If this is the case then when you press the pedal fast, the seals swell out and the brakes work well. If you press the pedal slowly the fluid can seep past and the brakes don't work as well. You could try pressing the pedal at different speeds to see if you can detect this. Just an idea before you buy a servo. | |

| Thanks all. I think you are right stevebod, The NRV is fine. I tried starting the engine with my foot on the brake and the pedal dropped a little as it should.
About to order a seal kit for the master cylinder.
Still be handy to know an adaptable/alternative servo though.

| I've started to check part numbers etc to see what modern replacements are available. According to Haynes 69-70 LHD cars were fitted with a Lockheed 4258-193. Anything 1971 onwards with an ATE T51-734.
ATE are still used on many German and French cars so the Renault Kangoo may be the answer.
Could one of our German speakers check on/contact;- www.ate-brakes.com/catalogues/online-catalogues/
I'm going to look at the Lockheed one next.
Cheers Jeff

| Souped Up. I speak German and have been looking at their website, and parts list catalogue. As is often the case, the 96 is not listed. Seems to start with the SAAB 99. Does anyone know if the SAAB 99, had the same ATE servo fitted, as the later 96s? Below is a photo of my old servo. It famously packed up 15 minutes after I left the house to go to the ferry, on the way to Sweden.... I drove 2 weeks with no servo. Big strong right leg at the end of it!!
The "T51" that you refer to can clearly be seen. "bremsegerat" simply means brake equipment, or similar. This brake servo would appear to have been fitted to Mercedes Benz cars. See E bay listing below. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=brake+servo+ate+t-51

| Come to think of it, does anyone know of a company that refurbishes brake servos?

| Not sure how easy they are to refurbish due to the construction with all those crimped joints between the two saucers.
Google throws up a couple of places that do it though. | |

| I had the servo on my Alvis refurbished by Past Parts of Bury St Edmunds. It might be worth giving them a call | |

| I've contacted Past Parts in Bury St Edmunds, and an outfit called Contract Auto Engineering in Stourport, Wor-cester-shire!!
I'll report back what they say in terms of can, or cannot do, and cost, if appropriate.

| I've had a further dig around the ATE site, found the classic section and put in a request for a modern replacement for the original part. | |

| Souped Up.
Keep us posted as to how that goes.
The company below have quoted me £120 + VAT + postage to refurbish my old unit unit, as long as the diaphragm piston is OK. This suggests that the diaphragm piston is not available as a part. I'm probably going to send them off my old unit, to see if it can be refurbed.
